Re: 1999 Mustang Cobra--extreme detail!

This is undoubtedly frowned upon by admins, but I am bumping my own thread without any progress-related content. I know that a few people were interested in this model, as well as my others (Bugatti EB110 for example) and although it appears I have fallen off the map, I have merely "taken a leave of absence" from the hobby. I graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and am working for Daimler AG, and live in a small rented apartment with absolutely no place to paint. My model stuff is boxed up (all my paints have coagulated...) in the spare bedroom of my parents' house in another state.

Once I get my OWN place, I will certainly be reviving the hobby, and with more income I should be able to afford some nice tools and raw materials. Having spent so many hours on these kits, I would hate to lose that time to "a former hobby," even though real cars have become a more exciting pastime. Visiting this forum once in a while inspires my creative talents and makes me want to do more detail work, so expect some in the future.

It helps that my department's senior manager just came by and told me how much he enjoys scale modeling as well. I will definitely be doing this just as soon as I can.

Sorry admins...but I have no plan to let this thread die.

Alex

Re: 1999 Mustang Cobra--extreme detail!

Way to go! I just graduated from Mechanical Engineering as well, and I am unemployed. Must be real fun working with real cars now?

Nice details on the mustang by the way.

Hmm, bumping your own thread. Frankly Alex, the work here isn't that advanced or of very high quality. I see potential but you should focus your goals, make a workspace, stop referring to your creative talents, and get on with it. Your paint is just bad. Other builders here do fantastic paint outdoors. In hobbies and career, you will be judged on results. You should undersell and overdeliver. That's how to attract meaningful recognition for your contribution. Sorry if this sounds harsh but I see in you myself about 20 years ago and wish someone had called me on my bullshit and forced me to step up my game. (P.S. Germans don't tolerate sloppy engineering.)

I believe you are mistaken in thinking that I bumped my own thread in order to "show off" my work. That is not the case whatsoever. I had basically planned on abandoning the hobby, and was then inspired in this forum and by my senior manager to continue on once I can acquire a proper workstation.

For the record, the paint is indeed HEINOUS... and it WAS shot outdoors, with a plastic "starter" Testors airbrush, using improperly thinned Testors enamel, by me at age 16 when I did not have enough money to buy proper equipment or enough knowledge to do things correctly.

I also am not sure where you see me "referring to my creative talents." I mentioned that I was inspired to be creative, but was not boasting about some great skill. I see many modelers on here that are incredibly skilled and that inspires me to be better... I would never claim to be "greatly advanced" when so many other people are better.

Sorry if I came across as boastful, but I just found myself looking through the thread and wishing I had time to update it... so I just posted that I am still planning to do so.

Your "P.S." statement is flat-out rude. You assume that I am a despicable engineer and a careless worker just because a car model I was working on several years ago, that I was not even happy with at the time, is not up to your standards. Did it occur to you that I may have gained some engineering knowledge during my undergraduate education?

This forum supposedly welcomes everyone, but the more I view it, while still being inspired by great modeling work, the more I see it becoming a group of intolerant "modeling professionals" who only want to see each other's work and force "noobs" out instead of encouraging and helping. Perhaps your post is just your way of giving a "kick in the pants" to get on with modeling (which I stated I cannot do in my current housing, as painting there is prohibited), but it comes across exactly as "get out, you suck."

If I am such an atrocity on the forum, I will just delete my account.

I don't really know the dynamics of the people involved with this comment, but isn't that a little harsh? And whats with the comment about sloppy engineering? Have you worked with Alex and know what his work is like? Just because someones skills weren't that 'advanced' when they started out on their build doesn't mean they are at the same level. Humans learn with experience and speaking from experience its comments like that above that make me not want to post any of my work here. These forums are meant to be a way to show what we are doing and get some HELPFUL advise, being basically told you are crap doesn't help out at all. I'll probably get bagged for this post but I dont care cos theres no way in hell I'd show my work on this site anyway

Re: 1999 Mustang Cobra--extreme detail!

I guess the point wasn't clear. I was trying to motivate the individual to try harder by calling him out on his weaknesses instead of showering him with hollow praise. Which do you think will benefit him more in the long run? I wouldn't bother if I didn't think he was capable of a lot more. (...and yes, I also think 924 was being boastful...)

924, set some goals and show us what you are really capable of.

Re: 1999 Mustang Cobra--extreme detail!

Strange way to make a point. Dont forget, this is the internet, subtlety and sarcasism dont carry well online. Still dont see the need for a dig at his working skills, if you bothered to talk to Alex you would know of some of his working life achievements, they might surprise you.
I've read over his post a few times and I dont see anything boostful in it, if you care to read it you see his intent is merely to say he plans to get back to the hobby once he has a workspace sorted out, or maybe I reading a different version of english.

I'm sorry that you find my account of having graduated and started a new job to be "boastful." I generally think of those as significant events in one's life, worth mentioning, especially when they segue into the statement, "so NOW I will be able to work on models, since I could not do so during school." While I always appreciate a good bit of motivation, your statements came across as attacks against my character and disgust for the fact that I had even dared to post my low-quality work on this forum, as though the title of this is "WIP - Street (Professional Modelers ONLY)." You do realize that the last piece of actual model work in this thread was from before you even joined the forum? I have been away from this hobby for 3 and a half years, and in that time have matured somewhat, as is normal. Just to check, though, I looked through my posts from age 18 and saw nothing boastful there either. Again, I do appreciate motivation, but insults to my person are not helpful in any way and certainly not welcome. If you honestly think I am some trumped up, full-of-himself windbag with zero modeling skills and delusions of grandeur, then as I said I will simply leave the forum.

This phrase expresses my general feelings about the situation, "Buddy, what's your problem?"

I agree with your post, what a bullshit asshole comment by Cratecruncher. Thanks for pulling this tread back up, looks like really good work to me, cant wait to see what your able to do once you do get an appropriate work space and new tools. Good to see that you have decided to not drop the hobby like you were going to at one point! Even if real cars can provide "more fun" I still think there is something you can get out of modeling that is entirely different!
