Re: In Progress - Tamiya Mercedes CLK GTR Team Sportswear

Wow mickbench,

looks like you really have thought about all the little bits and pieces that will make a great model.

I started my Mercedes CLK-DTM "Original Teile". I think, I will keep an eye on your build as a source of inspiration. If you don´t mind!

Being as I'm using Silver, I'll just shoot it right over the grey primer... I guess, I should really lay down a coat of black first as the black would actually allow the silver to reflect more....

Silvers, Blacks and very dark blues are the colours I find, that the darker the primer, the deeper it looks... Weird.. At least using silver saves a few coats of white primer, and another panel line re-scribe...

This is a fantastic thread, its a great way to show how to prep a model. Its not the best part of building kits but its by far the most important. Love what your doing esp the detailed build documentation.. Keep up good work!

Just FYI, I have an SMS Super Detail set for this car (and the Porsche GT1) to trade, I have a post in the classifieds..
Actually,

I wanted to ask you a question, if you don’t mind answering. The SMS Super detail set. I’ve got the templates in scanned jpg format, and I’ve printed them off, but they are labelled –

Sheet A
Sheet B

One has 1/20 written on it, the other 1/24, but I don’t know the pattern SMS used. Don’t suppose you could take a look in your detail set for me could you, and let me know?

Thanks..

Re: In Progress - Tamiya Mercedes CLK GTR Team Sportswear

I’ve now applied 4 mist coats of Floquil Railroad Bright Silver, and man that is bright.. What an awful colour to lay down. I tested the paint before I started on a scrap body, and even then I knew I was in for a rough ride.

You have to apply this stuff at 15 PSI, mists only and it does dry too fast. It flashes off as soon as you’ve applied it… It also dries rough, its not orange peel as such, but its weird.. Awful colour to get right, shows EVERY bit of dust, small swirl mark in the primer, everything… Even now, I’ve got a few problems, but I’m hoping once cleared a few times, then decaled and then cleared some more, it will tone down, and be able to be polished to a nice deep silver..

The shade is correct, no doubt, and it’s certainly drying fast, but the smell was atrocious. Only used quarter of the bottle, if that… Enough to do at least another three mercs like this one… Impressive, just hard to lay down.

If you are planning to use this colour, PREP 100%. Any flaw, and it shows like a Christmas tree light. I was kinda lucky, as the few faults I’ve got, decals and clear will take care of them.

Re: In Progress - Tamiya Mercedes CLK GTR Team Sportswear

Hmm…

Takes on a whole new glittering look when photos are taken in the sun. Hope no magpies are flying around, might be attracted to the silver, and try and fly off with it..

Dried down quite nicely actually, for an enamel paint it’s not that bad. Dries faster then any enamel I’ve ever used. Same it nearly kills you with the toxic fumes it gives off.. LOL

Looks like the panels are all the right shade, so no mismatching

And front and rear

I’ve ran out of halfords grey primer, so I’m just off down Halfords to get another can, so as I can make a start on some of the mechanical and interior parts.

Michael, this is going to look great. The prep work you have done is excellent and that silver...

Did you ever get those shocks installed on the Honda??

Re: In Progress - Tamiya Mercedes CLK GTR Team Sportswear

looks great
cant wait to see more of this!!

Silver is a bi*ch at times - and your right it shows every flaw that there is - unlike nearly every other colour which hides a certain extent.

good work

Re: In Progress - Tamiya Mercedes CLK GTR Team Sportswear

Holy cow! Is that silver for real?!?
Was the 1:1 bare metal or painted silver? It almost looks too silver but I'm sure you chose correctly

They both just say "Carbon Fiber Decal" on the top of each sheet.

Hope that helps?
