Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

No prob man. Wear some gloves too when handling the body after painting. The metalizers paint tends to rub off on alot of things. Especially greasy fingers.

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

Well, the body has gotten 3 layers of the Metalizer... I would have stopped at two, but I nicked the body with my fingernails when I was buffing! Arg! The color looks GREAT when buffed, though.

I didn't get as far as I would have liked to on the body today, because the dash was a lot more complex than I expected, and I didn't get as much time to work as I planned. However, I think the work that I did came out rather well :-D Here are pictures!

The instructions didn't call for the wires to be painted, but I decided to do that to add a little bit of color to a very boring gray dash. I also made an executive decision to paint the keypad on the center stack orange, to draw some attention to it. Finally, the decals on the center stack were the WORST! It's not that the decals themselves were bad, it's just they were three separate decals, and even though I thought I put enough time for each to dry, when I tried to put the second on, the first (top) one moved all over. Bit of a pain, but worth the results.

Thanks in advance for all the comments!

if i were you, before you get too far into it, sand down or otherwise remove any of the molded in wires and replace with real ones.

If you ever see this kit in person, you notice that all the molded-in wires both on the exterior and these in the interior, are all run along major countor lines. This can be liveable, if you're still building the movie car, and will cover those areas with other dressings...

When I started removing the cables that run along the fenders, I quickly realized I was in for quite a lot of resculpting to return the fenders to the proper shape.

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

Well, I don't have the patience or skill (in my opinion) to remove all the wires, not to mention I don't want to ruin this awesome kit, so I'm gonna leave the wires the way they are.

However, I do have pictures of the body:
Here's before buffing:

And here's afterward!

The difference is hard to see in the pictures, but the stainless looks really good in real life. I'll seal it tonight, and then get on to painting the wires, and the logos, and all that jazz. I'm also hoping a little bit that the sealer brings out a little more shine.

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

well, I was mainly refering to the wires on the dashboard when i typed that.

also, the car has a stainless steel body and isn't really meant to shine (as in glossy paint shine).

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

Awesome work. . . Nice job with the metalizer. . .

I went the hard route with mine by coverin' it in BMF. . .PITA and no room for error but the finish was great. . .

Good luck with your build. . .

Any pics of that? Bet it looks great!

Nice work on this car. Brought back a lot of childhood memories about rich drug dealers who started their own car line, lol.

Great work Prof. Brown. Marty will be glad of the progress.

How difficult to convert the time machine to a street version in your opinion?

Thanks

W.

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

Well, an update, as I can't manage to stick with one build for too long right now, but I think I'm really getting into this one for a bit. Here's some work I've done tonight, based on some pictures I took in Universal Studios

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

I did some work this afternoon. I actually used the movie for a little bit of reference, especially with the interior elements. This time, I included a standard US quarter to show you just how small some of the elements are.
