WIP: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

Well, I started this kit today by spray painting the exterior of the car. The model is really nice, no flash, great chrome. The tyres are top notch. I love the way that the wheels will tuck under, just like in the movie, at the flip of a switch and even comes with a stand for when you want to display it like that. And then you can just flip the switch, and it's back on it's wheels. Here are pictures:

The only problem is the going is slow as the instructions are in Japanese! Also, I'm going to be painting the taillights instead of using the decals. I think they'll look better that way.

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

This is a really nice kit. I have 3 or 4 of them. I just wish it were easier to de-time-machine them.

An old one I built looked pretty good w/ the decals under the taillights.

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

I started working on this kit again, along with the Focus WRC I have, and I just finished all the steps needed to make the wheels flip. That was a lot of hard work, especially for a guy who has a wicked bad cold, and if I stayed around paint too long (or glue fumes, for that matter) my nose started running like crazy and my cough acted up. Pictures up later tonight!

I've always wanted to get one of those kits!
I loved those movies when they came out and they're still great today.

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

I was lucky enough to grab the kit on sale at a local 'mom and pop' hobby store in Middletown, CT called Amottos. It was 50% off when I got it! And if anybody need reference shots of the BttF DeLorean, I just got back from Universal Orlando and took plenty of pictures!

Oh yeah, I also started work on the interior today. I can only work for 15 to 20 minutes at a time before I start feeling really lightheaded... an effect of the cold I have right now I found out I don't have a green or blue for the car, so I'm gonna pick those up tomorrow afternoon, and then make more progress. The interior tub is complete, and the sides and seats need just a little bit of paint to cover the bare plastic where I was holding the pieces. Getting the dash, rear shelf, and accessories for the arm-rest done is my goal for tomorrow.

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

If you haven't done so yet, and are capable. I recommend getting the testors metalizers paint for the body. Really looks great when finished. Good luck on this.

Re: DMC 12 DeLorean (Back to the Future 2)

Well, I'd first off like to thank blubaja for their advice about the Testor's Metalizers. I went out and got a rattlecan each of Stainless Steel and Sealer today, and am currently waiting for the body to dry so I can buff with paper towels.

Secondly, thanks to everybody for their kind comments. Coming to AF and clicking on your thread, expecting one or two replies, but actually seeing 5 or more really makes a guy feel good and helps motivate me to work harder on my kits. Therefore, I have an update, albeit without pictures. They will come later tonight, I promise!

So far, I've got the seats, e-brake and door panels glued onto the tub. The top and bottom of the dash are painted, complete with colored wires, which I achieved by using toothpicks and the steadiest hand I possibly could. There are a few offs, but overall, I'm really happy with how it came out. I'm about to go out to dinner with my family, so the body is going to dry while I eat, and I'll buff the body tonight while watching TV. All I need to do to finish the dash is finish the time circuits and put the decals on said circuits, as well as the dashboard. Then I just have a few gauges to attach to the glove-box and stick the alarm clock on top, and the entire dash complex will be done! Then I'll take pictures and post them up for you all to see. I'm glad I can build a kit that most people haven't seen a lot before
