WIP - Honda NSX-R

Problem encountered!

I have used the clear orange (spray can TS-73) over gloss aluminum (TS-17), however, the result is not quite positive.

Problem is where the those door/hood/window lines (see the blue circled part below), clear orange doesn't seem like to stick on to the edge of the lines, hence, if you look closer to those lines, you will see the gloss aluminum showing on those edge (ie: noticable lighter orange closer to the edge)....



Any good adivse on resolving this issue? I have tired to spread another lay of clear orange on top. Didn't help all that much (as a matter of fact, I have used up my new can of TS-73)

I was thinking of using dilute clear orange acrylic paint to touch up on those edges, and clear coat it after.

I am actually not too please with the effect. Maybe as Ferrari TR suggested, clear orange over gold might be a better combination. (be sure to try it on yours!)

amusegt1: This is one of many old kits that I bought YEARS ago, I have spotted this on ebay before at reasonable price, so try there.

Gamerxz: NSX-R is a general term used between the NA1 and NA2. I got title off the the licence plate on car on the box (and the instruction manual)

Any suggestion with the dilemma would be greatly apprepeciated!

When using clear colors you really have to sneak up on the panel lines, just like clear clear. Many mist coats are required, and let each set up before going on to the next coat.

Yea..Mist coats. That might change the saturation of the color though..I love the exact way you have that color right now. Try to kill those panel lines! Keep up the awsome progress!

That color is looking sick on there though... dont get down... get out there and fix it.

Paint on panel lines a part the cromathic result is awesome: very deep: you could try to fix it but I think you need a light hand of silver to cover-up the mistakes, I think the clkear color can't make it, then just 3 or 4 light mistcoat (at least 1 hours waiting) and then the wetcoat(at least 1 day waiting) than wait some days to polish: it may be fantastic to me I'll try with my Z

You're not going to be able to fix this one. No matter how many layers of clear color you put over it, or how you apply them, it's not going to hide the fact that the color is already thicker in places than others.

Candy colors take excruciating care and patience to apply. They really can only be put on by mist coats- wet coats will allow the paint to collect in some areas and thin in others, and then it's over. It's not going to be shiney until you cover it with uncolored clear. This color does look spectacular, though.

Honestly, if I were to try to replicate this color (and CobraColors didn't have it availible), I'd probably go about it with all Tamiya acrylics. Prime it with whatever, paint the colorcoat (chrome silver and clear orange, probably a 1:1 mix), and then lots of acrylic clear. But then you will get a metallic color, not a candy.

i love this colour, shame about the panel lines. i hope you can find a way of fixing this dilemma. good luck!

Drag this one back out from the graveyard! Wedding + New house owned my time.

Made such little to none progress but I am glad that I semi-resolved the "edge" issue by apply clear orange by hand with a small brush. Not as perfect as I would like with spray but I guess that would be the best I could do without stripping it down...








Now, I need some advises, I am working on the engine bay, however, the little "DOHC VTEC" is quite hard to paint in red. I've tried fine brush, toothpicks... still couldn't get it on with a solid colour, any ideas?

Bought some materials today, first time flocking the interior, I hope it's as easy as the instructions on here.


What's up with the telephone line on the left? A $2 Canadian dollars of 50ft phone line = 50ft of these guys...

Looks good from here. Nice save. I did a similar job, but I used acrylic clear red (clear TS weren't out yet) and then the clear coat after, and it cracked up a year later.

Take a look at:

The bit with the foil on the Ferrari valve covers is the method you need to use. What paints are you using? If you happen to be able to use different types of paint for the aluminum and red, it would be even easier to take off one but not the other.

BTW, I think you have a regular late-model NSX motor shown for reference. The early Type R motor looks like this:

(Sorry for the tiny pic! :o )

Obviously that NSX is modified, but Honda's known for using red-top motors in the Type Rs.

good recovery with the paint job. You seemed to have fixed it up nice.

Dry painting, is the way to get the red, put paint on hardish brush, I use my brothers games workshop dry brush, and then using a tissue, take most of the paint off, this means it should only go onto the raised parts. That paint job looks great. If you hadn't of said that you had touched up by hand I wouldn' have guessed from the photos.
