that block isnt a benson block because benson doesnt use closed deck sleeves, he leaves the blocks open deck.

yes its common, i think benson is the only company that doesnt close the deck

It's not like everyone with a honda runs around with a closed deck, but there are several reputable companies who make sleeves to re-sleeve the block and close the deck. If you have the money to spend then you can do it. The companies and parts are out there for honda motors.

oh yea i just remebered that.

IB/GE also uses open deck btw(the GE sleeves have "fingers" that are about half way down the sleeve).

i would call GEs sleeve closed deck because solid deck stocks the sleeves from moving, thats what GE's sleeves does, benson doesnt have anything to reenforce the sleeves to stop them from moving.

but i make it sound like a bad thing, because earl laskey, father of mike laskey the professional racer uses benson sleeves and recommends them

whats the difference between open and closed decks and how much could a re sleeving cost when I buy the engine should I just tear it down and take them the block?? I can do the head work my self

I would tear the engine down to the block and bring them that in order to save money, but i would talk to them and see if thats ok first. I was going to do all the sanding and prep work before my car was painted, but the painters wouldn't touch a car that they didn't prep.....these guys might have the same policy!

technically, those reinforcements are under the deck; but they pretty much enforce the area of the sleeve thats under the most load; imo GE style>*.

These are closed deck sleeves. These are pictures of AEBS t-sleeves and Darton MID (Modular Integrated Deck) Sleeves. These are a closed deck. Look at the pics and you'll see it's closed at the top of the deck around the cylinders, not open.
