Re: Re: Re: Le Mans Contest Entry: Sauber-Mercedes C9 1989

Ahhh, crap!!!!!

So Ramon decided to join in. Now I know for CERTAIN that there is no reason to try and build a full detail car to compete...;-)>

I've been following his fotki folder of this build and to say it's the racecar eq. of Hiroboy's 1:12th Skyline would be a fitting description!

Both Ramon and Alex's creativity and building skills are a joy to view!

Welcome and thanks (to you and Alex) for sharing you build pics and details!

Bill

Thanks Bill!

And here are more pics on the Sauber...

This is the stabilizer bar and its clamps, the bar is plastic rod, the arms and the claps are made of plastic sheet, in the ends o this arms I cut slits with a saw blade to attach the links to the stabilizer bracket and drilled holes for a pin:

Then I made the stabilizer bracket with thin plastic sheet, the links for the lower arm and stabilizer arm were made with plastic rod pressed at the ends to make the joints:

Here the finished parts in their locations:

For the steering gear I used aluminum tubing, the outer one is to help fixing the steering gear to the chassis, then the aluminum steering gear with a brass rod for the linkage:

The steering gear in its place, the brass rod runs smoothly inside the aluminum, so it works perfectly.
Now the suspension mechanicals are finished.

Once finished the suspension, it's time to do the rest of the front, the first part in the list is the radiator with its hoses, some plastic and soldering rods did the trick:

The radiator in its place, for this part I will use PE radiator grilles, I'll use the ScaleMotorsport at the top and the S27 at the bottom (since it is visible from the front air intake) this PE's will be added in further steps to avoid damages when doing the rest of the scratchbuilding, I also made the front wall of the chassis to support the radiator:

And as Bill said, I have also a Fotki album with some more pics, if you want to see more details:

http://public.fotki.com/AgaMo/modeli...uber/c9-ramon/

Besides this Fotki folder you'll find another folder with another C9 that my brother is building, he is doing the Michelin version, and is doing very interesting things too, he's almost machining everything!

He wants to participate in this contest also, but we think the Michelin vrsion didn't run in LeMans, or did it?

Best regards!

Re: Le Mans Contest Entry: Sauber-Mercedes C9 1989

This just keeps getting better! I particularly like the trick of pressing the ends of the plastic rod to flatten them for the attachment points.
Yeah, unfortunately I'm pretty sure the C9 didn't run at Le Mans in Michelin colours. How about making it into one of the the circuit board liveried cars that practiced in 1988 before being withdrawn?
I'm off to check out your album for more details!

There is a chance that this car won´t be allowed to be be in the contest. One eye cries, the other laughs. We need to stop this guy of making especially my skills look like crap. Who is with me? somebody said, he´s from Mexico?
To be honest, I never thought I´d fall in love with a Group C Build. It´s so amazing, the suspension is a KILLER!
Well, go ahead and definately put a livery on the car that will enable you to be in the contest!

I've been looking at this over and over. Amazing skills are shown here. There's 1 thing that I still haven't find out over the years, when you see a project like this popping up...
How are you gonna paint everything? Is it all glued in place already, or will everything be dismounted again, painted and then mounted? Too many times I've seen incredible craftmanship gone to waste, because of a bad painting job that ruined most of the nice details.
Already some plans and thoughts in the painting area?

Don't know if you've seen these pictures before?

Re: Le Mans Contest Entry: Sauber-Mercedes C9 1989

Godfather23, this model will be allowed in the contest as Ramon is building it as the 1989 LM winner. His brother is building a different version that did not race at Le Mans, so isn't eligible unfortunately.

Everything can be disassembled, since I'm using pins/studs to join everything, in fact, because of this, the suspension could be functional, but since everything is made of plastic I prefer to let it fixed, it will only steer.
As soon as I finish the scratch building on the front I will paint everything and put it aside ready to be mounted later, because there is more to do on the chassis with the interior tub and the engine.
I let the paint to the end because I constantly assemble and disassemble everything to check for interferences and this surely will ruin any finish, specially when metallic colors are used.

The pics you mention are awesome, I already have them and in fact those were the main reference I used to make the front.

Thanks!

I was planning on building a C9 for the contest in the coming months. Not any more, after seeing this buildup. I think I'll have much more fun watching Ramon do it. This is awesome stuff.
