Funny you mention that.... ![]() Okay, so I buy my own aftermarket clutch for $214us. I get quoted $312.40 for labor, plus $60 for machining the flywheel, an extra "fee" for labor and oil to have them drain the tranny oil and put in synthetic, and taxes on top of that all. Mysteriously my bill crept upto over $500 by today when I get my car back!!! They charged me $44 for the synthetic oil alone, and another $9 for labor, they ordered and INSTALLED a new clutch cable WITHOUT my authorization, and then they leave my clutch with 3-4" of freeplay!!!! So I ride home with the clutch letting out right off the floor, and check my Service Manual to see what it says about clutch freeplay. Between .425 and .59" of freeplay is what it should be by the specs. So my dad calls the shop up, and says that I thought it felt funny on the way home, and that the manual recommends only a half inch of freeplay instead of 4". I take my car back down to the shop, and the Focker gets in my face about "neither you nor your father are mechanics" and "I can't believe you brought in a clutch. You wouldn't take food into a restaraunt and say 'can you cook this?'" Then he proceeds to say that as the new clutch wears in, the freeplay will decrease. I started getting snippy at this point and said, "yes, but I should NOT have to deal with over 3" of freeplay until my clutch wears in." I showed him the EXACT location of the recommendation in the Service Manual, so he had his worker come out and fix it right there with him. Then he gave me more shit about how it's all the way to the end now, and that by not giving it enough room to move right now it will cause terrible, horrible, no good, very bad premature wear on the clutch. I nearly threw the Manual at this guy. To think this idiot was the MANAGER!!!!Stupid people never cease to amaze me with their ignorance!!! It's like this moron had to talk slowly just because I don't have something hanging between my legs!!! Oh, and I darn nearly said something about, "Yes, my father WAS a head parts manager for Acura, Honda, and Hyundai as well as a mechanic not all that long ago."

So Tangie, did you get a look at the old parts to see what the clutch and cable were like?
In NZ we have a right by law to see (and take) the old parts. You wouldn't believe how many mechanics have been embarrassed to admit they hadn't done the work they had charged for. Some service places seem to think they posess some kind of higher intelligence like fixing cars is rocket science or something. I don't go to those places. I stick to the ones where I can wander right up to the person working on my car and have a conversation with them about what's going on. $60US for skimming a flywheel is criminal. I can get it done by my brake man for $12.50US.

And I agree about the cost of resurfacing the flywheel. I can get my resurface, lightened, and balanced for $75US (used to be $50).

As for the price of the flywheel, they were the only ones who would take a clutch that I brought in, and they were willing to take my car ASAP. I had to bite the bullet on it.
