well it is true if you do research on medical studies performed on vegitarians and on people who eat meat.. you will find out that not eating meat is very unhealthy for you. Cause there is no true way of giving your body the same stuff that is in meat thru chemical supplements and soy foods.. but then again if you eat crappy meat that is high in fat and is not lean meat that is not healthy for you either cause it causes high blood pressure and cholestrol and also may cause clogged arteries and blockages.. I feel that there is a correct way of eating meat and that is getting the best quality that you can afford.. and eating it on a regular basis.. if you think about it honestly all the vegans and vegitarians out there are constantly takin some kind of herbal supplement for either being sick or replacing something that they are denying there body of and that is not health for a person.. and if it is a moral thing.. i think that is just retarded. these animals are raised for the reason of being in our food chain.. just like corn and tomatoes are raised to be in our food chain...

Re: Vegetarianism

Some very weak and unfounded statements people.

You do realise that its quite possible to become extremly unhealthy eating meat don't you?

In the last 2 years the only meat Iv eaten has been less than one serving of chicken per week, the odd bit off beef and pork hand raised on a friends farm, and fish, prehaps 3-4 times per week.

Right now Im the healthiest Iv ever been.
I have a very physicaly and mentaly demanding job, and have no trouble working 50+ hours a week, then going out all week end.
With the exception of the odd mild cold I have not been sick at all during that time, even when the rest of my flat have all had the flu.

If you take care to watch what you eat, and pay attention to what your eating to make sure you get a variety of all things that are good then there is no reason that living with out meat is bad for you.
Infact there plenty of cultures who do not eat any meat at all, and live very long and healthy vegan life styles. Most budhists, and some Hindus will not any meat, and yet have some of the longest life expectancys on the planet.

Re: Vegetarianism

i guess i will jump in here after moppie. these people who do not eat meat in 3rd world cultures can avoid eating meat for one reason. they do not wash their food, or atleast not very well. therefore, specific necessary minerals are obtained by ingesting dirt.
-decent amounts of iron reside in DARK greeny goodness.
-i didnt want to post in this thread because i do not agree with this diet. its just not for me.

Re: Vegetarianism

Moppie, basically you are saying you eat a lot of lean, good quality protein which is what we are all promoting here. Vegetarian or not. It is obviously especially important for those who workout and do weights to rebuild muscle.

Re: Re: Vegetarianism

You got it Oz, I also eat a lot of rice and pasta, which is good for energy carbs, and lots, and I mean lots of freash fruit and veg.
I also drink quite a bit of milk, and have some eggs on a regular basis.

I guess on my Average day I start with some generic coco pops with a sliced banana for breakfast, then sandwich or salad for lunch, normaly with some fish in it. I eat one tomato a day, normaly in the sandwich, with what ever else in season. At the moment its avacado, lettuce, cucumber, cheese, and prehaps some sprouts of some kind, then a dressing, at the moment its a good thick spread of Humus.

Dinner will be rice or pasta based dish, or sometimes a baked potato or kumera. Then fish, either freash and fried, or poached in a sauce (nandos lemon and coriander tonight), or salmon (dolphin friendly) from a can mixed through the pasta with pesto, or with a pasta salad, or salad on the side.
I also eat a fair amount of flafel when I can be bothered preparing it (mixed from dry powder), or I can find some quality prepared stuff, but it needs to be cooked in a lot oil, so is a little fattening.

Snacks are at least one serving of fruit, and what ever I feel like from a selection of crackers and cheese, vegemite sandwich, more fruit, chocolote biscuts, musile bar etc etc

If I go out Ill have what evers on the menu thats meat free, normaly a salad or fish dish, but indian is great, because they normaly have a quite an extensive range of vegetarian currys, since many Indians are vegetarian. Thai resturants are also good.
If theres nothing on the menu that is suitable then Ill have chicken dish, but I do limit how much chicken I eat, no more than about 4 times a month, although it is dependant on how Im feeling, or how much work Iv been doing. If Iv had an exceptionaly busy week I might have an extra chicken based meal, but it will be takeaway, and only becuase I havn't had the time to prepare anything fish based at home.

Things BBQ's are very easy of course, usualy a nice hunk of Salmon wrapped in tinfoil

P.S. I don't take any suplements at all.

Re: Vegetarianism

Oh.. I LOVE meat, yet I don't seem to be eating too much of it lately. I've been having a lot of pasta... meh. I guess that's what poor college students do.

About the venison... it is second only to rabbit! Wild game is the best meat ever IMO.

Yes, of course, that is why I said you need to have a BALANCED diet. If you eat too much red meat you leave yourself open to heart disease. Also, on a side note, nobody should eat pork ever. It is one of the worst things for you. Your body can't even digest it.
