Re: Why does everyone apologize for...

There are kids the world over who have never seen the inside of a school and would probably love to learn to read and write.I have been fortunate enough to have been gifted,at no cost to myself, the ability to share ideas with others through the written word.It would be discourteous of me were I to use this gift without care.

Well said and even somewhat inspirational. You are quite philosophical, and kind of the "conscience" for this board and I commend you for it.

However, most of those kids are not posting here, as the gift of education often comes before the gift of message boards and internet connectivity. For those of us who are gifted with such abundant resources, please take a moment to state your problems, questions, and random observations in a clear and concise manner.

Maybe if someone could make me a glossary of stupid kids terms "ie. j00z, or in my case even n00b. I am lost when it comes to 13 year old kid lexicon. (Any of you thirteen year olds want to know what "lexicon" is just PM me )

Re: Why does everyone apologize for...

If I make a long post it's up to you whether you read it or not. There are thousands of visitors to the board from all walks of life. Some will find a long read entertaining or thought provoking, some will skip this post because it's too long.We all use AF in different ways. There are no 'wrong' ideas about post length, only methods of presentation that don't appeal to you.I'd rather read a well-contructed paragraph than a dozen simplistic oneliners.

But I'll still try and post both.

Kids'll be kids, couldn't care less about them.

And long posts are good, if they are reaadable and have some form of common-sense in them

u guys should visit the honda forums more often. most intelligent ppl EVAR! hehe...

nah, biggest pet-peeve would be when ppl capitalize the first letter of EVERY word they type. its mind boggling.

as others have said, its nice to read a long, well thought out-post as long as it has relevence to the given thread and it uses proper grammatical rules. ppl who try to connect a 10,000 word reply in ALL comma's...that gets a bit irritating.

I don't know about you guys but whenever I read a post with bad grammar (sometimes I don't capitalize my i's or put apostrophes) I just break out laughing. Maybe it's just me...

I remember my english teacher tested me and said that I read at a college level. If he saw half the posts on this forum he'd die from the sight of poor grammar . It's hard to read between the 0wnd joo, pwnz, and all that other . The only reasonable word I ever found was gei(my substitute for gay) since AOL was somewhat strict in chat rooms. Kids don't realize that it makes them sound intellectually challenged and it makes it harder to read sometimes.

This, of course; is my . We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

P.S: Anyone seen a pic of an advertisement that says Hooked on Ebonics? I saw it once and it was funny as hell.

I agree with all that is being said, especially about the slang. While I have a much smaller vocabulary than our highly educated users I do get my point across. One needn't use "big" words to do so, which brings me to another point.
My spelling and grammer absolutely sucks. I've never been good at and honestly couldn't give a toss about it either.

Also don't forget there are two main types of english used on these boards. Oxford and Webster. What may appear to be a spelling mistake ie: tires (webster) tyres (oxford) are in fact correct in the right english form.

Outside the fact that many may not be as educated as others, and getting snide about what may appear to be a "lessor" forum member is no better than the complete and utter jackass that feels compelled to either bash someone for no good reason or be a self appointed english professor correcting everyone.

We should be here to share in the wealth of knowledge that is available and also pass and take in ideals in a constructive manner.

On topic however, I appolgise when I make a mistake. I've never appologised for a long post or something simular.

Well, I'm not to apologise for submitting "long" posts or using a vocabulary in excess of 3000 words. Otherwise, I'd probably spend more time apologising on the board than actually posting.

I'd rather communicate using prose that clearly defines my intentions and thoughts. And to use that unfashionable attribute of using blindingly simple logic of cause and effect to explain where I stand. In an age of 30 second soundbites, dogma and ideology instead of structured reasoning, morals/ethics/values - it's actually unusual to find posts where someone is prepared to take the time to explain how they came to their conclusions.

I'm not always going to agree with everyone - particularly when it comes to politics because perceptions of facts and their interpretations differ. For instance, Yogs and I are unlikely to agree about certain issues of US policy but I think there is some mutual respect arising from the decency to post and debate.

At one stage of my life, I spent time exploring a career option of going into journalism before I chose a career in commerce. Several of my friends and acquaintances are writers, journalists or work in PR/Advertising - and most of my friends take pride and derive enjoyment in the debating of issues, events and philosophy especially over a glass of wine or a beer. In turn, this experience hones our skills in persuasion, opens doors to new viewpoints, provides opportunities to experience new things and see new perspectives.

There are several folk who I do have significant respect on this board for the time and thought that they take from time to time in their posts. It makes a stark contrast from some of the other posts that occupy most of the slots on the board - and I applaud and encourage folk to take the time to consider, think and submit posts that reflect their thoughts and engage in intelligent debate.

I never understood why people apologize for long posts either. I do agree that the grammar could be better in a lot of posts, but mine isn't perfect so I can't really complain too much.

If I post something - long or short - and you take the time to read it, thanks! If you don't, oh well....
