Neither of them but this is what I would do.

1. Tell my family to get away.

2. Pull out the Colt .45 and warn him.

3. If he doesn't listen give warning shot in the air.

4. If all else fails and he doesn't listen, just shoot his balls.

protecting my family would be Priority 1 in my book, and killing him would be the last and ultimate choice...i'd pull it out on him and if he's still coming at me then, i'd fire a warning shot, then if he's still comin....i'd shoot him in the leg or foot, when he has been subdued then i would take my family to a safer location A.S.A.P

Thats a good answer.

However, in the heat of the moment it's not feasible to aim for a leg or foot. You would be better advised to aim for the largest mass.

You also need to incorperate verbal actions into the equation.

If its a 350 pound Hells Angel, I let the bastard know that you have a .45 and in no uncertain terms let him know that if he doesn't back the fuck up, I'll blow his ass away. If he does, call the cops. If he doesn't blow a hole in his chest and then call the cops.

Liberal and conservative have nothing to do with protecting ones family. However, you will find that the person more likely to have that .45 is going to be libertarian when it comes to gun ownership.

Well for starters I don't walk around with a loaded 45 calibre pistol here - it's basically illegal to do so here. The logical thing is to put myself between the individual and my family (and direct my family to get the hell out of there and call for help).

Try to calm the guy down and get him to put the knife down (and give more time for my family to get out of harm's way)... make sure I keep my distance and evaluate my options. Time is your best weapon - the longer you can maintain distance the further the family can move from harm's way and the more likely the police can intervene.

My martial arts training has taught me that if you can avoid having a physical confrontation then that's preferable than getting into a one. You use physical intervention as absolutely the last resort because it carries the most risk...

Even if I had a loaded weapon it's something that I would reveal only if there is no other option. And for those who kid themselves about shooting a leg or an arm - believe me I'm a very good shot but with a pistol in that situation you aim at the largest mass to ensure a hit and also to consider what happens in the line of fire if you miss - you certainly do not want to responsible for harming someone else who is potentially in the line of fire.

You hit to incapacitate and then keep your distance until help arrives.
