This is our nations future?

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...a_school_tests

That is a link to a story regarding 13,000 highschool seniors in Florida. All of them will not graduate as scheduled because all of them failed a newly required state test. And these people are supposed to be the future of the United States? I can understand 20 people in the state failing them but 13,000? Honestly, how bad does that reflect on your school if 13,000 students bomb a test.

If that many kids are failing I think the test should be re-examined. I mean yeah I know they are the state that cant properly punch holes in paper when they vote , but they cant be that stupid , the test must be pretty hard.

Yeah, they could do what they did in South Africa, make the tests easier so more people can pass
It basically equates to making the test fit the ignorance of the population instead of educating the population to the level required to pass the test.

well they're talking about the whole state of Florida right well they weren't required to pass it to graduate until now....so i guess the teachers and students were pretty lax on itz importance until now:silly2:

and i hate with a pashion statements like this

Quote:
But South Florida's black community leaders and legislators plan a protest this week, denouncing the FCAT as unfair to minority students.
i would like a full explanation as to how it is unfair to minorities.....statements like this can hurt more than they try and make it help

they did say alot of people who were immigrants that were still learning english had trouble with the reading parts. But unless that is the majority of people failing the test than the protest are for no reason.

They're in an English speaking country, they chose to come here, if they can't handle it they shouldn't have come over here.

Hey, I'm an immigrant, do you see me hiding behind it?

yeah but thats not fair for people who are still learning english while they are in school. If I moved , to lets say france , I would be expected to learn french but I'd hope I wouldnt be penalized for it while im learning.

When I was 6 I moved from England to South Africa, I had to learn Afrikaans at school, if I didn't pass the language, I didn't pass the grade.....easy as that:o
You only get a 3 year exemption before you MUST pass too, no questions asked......

Give them the same test translated, see the same amount fail..

I don't think a single test should determine if you graduate or not. It's like measuring your aptitude with the SATs. The test has nothing on the basis of common sense, and that's a very important thing.

Don't get your HS diploma, you are fucked in life. I think this will cause a major HS dropout rate, and more people will just go to college to get their GED. Then they still have to pay out their ass for college though. What a sham.

i think testing to graduate is a good idea....if u went thru school cheating and scaming....then it will show...but the down side is those who have trouble with standardized testing will suffer

I aced all the standardized tests in school and I still hate them , I can see where some of the questions would be confusing to some people. Especially if there was any language problems . I agree they should translate the test.

I agree with BLU

Not only that, translating the test kind of defeats the whole purpose of the test, doesn't it?

You're in English speaking schools, so why should you be able to take your tests in Spanish/Portugese/Mandarin/Russian/Insert Appropriate Language here......

What's next, will you want maths tests simplified so that those not good at math can also pass them, and chemistry tests should use layman's terms instead of the chemistry terms?
