The SMG is not better than the F1...just b/c it has like a dozen settings doesnt make it the best...anyways...you MUST have seen Ferrari win at F1...if BMW was so great....why arent they winning at F1?

LOL

we are talking manual based semi-automatic trannys here, not whose F1 team is better, that is an entirely different argument

i first countered ur statement that ferrari F1's manual based semi-automatic tranny was the best by saying BMW's SMG II was the best, and i stick by my statement (so do many automotive journalists, if u ever bother to check comparisons)

whether u are talking refinement or performance, BMW's SMG II beats Ferrari's F1 tranny . . . lets look at performance first, shall we?

ferrari F1 takes .15 seconds to upshift, while BMW SMG II takes .08 seconds to upshift (were talking both in sport modes, sport position and S6, respectively)
as we can see here, both trannys in sport mode, SMG II upshifts 2x faster then Ferrari's F1

what about refinement?
Ferrari has what . . . 3 different modes? (full auto, sport position, semi-auto) while the BMW has 5 different automatic modes A1-A5, and 6 different sport modes S1-S6
not to mention such features BMW implemented into their tranny such as hill assist (for slower drivers, pull the left paddle towards you and the car will plant itself on an incline to allow for transition between gas and brake), a burnout mode, and a launch mode, which eliminates all wheel spin (perfect F1 style starts everytime)

is it any question why BMWs SMG II is the best manual based semi-automatic tranny out there? if so, please ask . . .

oh, one more thing i forgot to mention, the option for the inferior F1 style tranny on a Ferrari is close to $10k, BMWs SMG II is $2400

What a stupid, stupid, stupid argument. BMW have only been in F1 for a few years now and it's well known that the Williams team is letting the joint venture down, as admitted by Williams themselves. BMW has more than kept its part of the deal, having the most powerful engine in all of F1 in only their second year in the sport.

If you have nothing intelligent to say, say nothing at all

Re: favorite weekend car: Maserati 4200 GT, Ferrari 355 F1, Porsche 996 C4S or 500 SL?

The Ferrari will be hidesously expensive to maintain, but you'd be in possession of the most beautiful "small Ferrari" in recent history, or as some think (me included), ever.

Of all the cars you listed the 355 and 996C4S will give you the most driving enjoyment (by far), and the 911 is the better drive, though it doesnt sound as good (the sports exhaust makes it sound nice but not quite 355-nice). However, to echo someone's previous post, i'd go for a 993 twin-turbo, it has no stability issues , incredible dry/wet weather performance, much better looking than the 996TT, and is reasonable to maintain. Awesome car

hello cray .. thank u for coming by

I am agree with u ... I like the 355 model more than the 360 .. but like u said .. the maintenance cost really haunted me ... I better spend big number once than buy something that keep burdening me all the time ..

great info from u ... still difficult to decide ... .. I'll try to check the 993 TT when it available in here.

if u are seriously considering this option, and want to shift a tiptronic with SMG paddles . . . (BMW dealers dont carry this)

this guy on e46fanatics.com specializes in those kits, he has SMG tiptronic retrofits for any car thats an automatic which uses tiptronic (mostly any BMW) . . . just look around the board or ask someone, i dont think the kit is all to expensive either
