Question

I purchased a 1986 300ZX about 8 months ago and am now getting around to fixing its problems. The biggest problem is the engine but my question is on the passenger side of the engine there is a fan and a directional tube moving air from below the engine to the front 2 injectors. Can anyone tell me what its for. I have been looking in my manuals trying to figure it out. Is it required and if so how necessary is it? Any direction on this topic will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

in japanese "V" blocks they were afraid that the front of the engine would heat up too much, causing overheating (much like the middle cylinders in a 3 or 5 cyl. car--aka SAAB's early days). Disconnect the fan and see if there's any hesitation in the motor (Light smoking from exhaust, sputtering, or odd firing of the engine. If any of these symptoms occur, the fan is hooked up to the Computer... disconnect it from the computer and remove the aplicable fuse, this would get rid of the fan, and the side effects of removing it.

ooops, wrong again.

It's the injector cooling fan. In early FI cars there were some probs with the injectors heat soaking, then vapor locking. The injector dcooling fan was supossed to help this.

You can disconnect it without worring too much. Some people in hot climates might have a prob every once in a while. But letting the car sit for 10 mins is usually all it takes to get it fired again.
