DTC Code P2463 Duramax DPF Filter - Soot Accumulation

My truck will not go into the automatic Regeneration to clean the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Check Engine Light came on, it is throwing code P2463 DPF Soot Accumulation. My scanner shows back pressure is only 0.1 PSI at idle, and normal driving around 2,000 RPM it reaches a high of only 1.17 PSI.
It usually does a Regen about once per tank of fuel, (elevated idle speed of 800 instead of 640RPM for about 20 miles or so). But it is not entering regen.
Now it goes into the power-limiting mode after about a minute of driving.
When in the limp mode, it will definitely not get the exhaust hot enough to regen. And without a Regen, it will not clean the DPF. Vicious circle.
Any ideas on how to get it to clean the DPF? Thanks. Truck has 114K miles on it now. I have heard GM extended the Emissions Warranty on the diesels to 120K, but not sure what years or models?

This seems like a chicken and egg quandry. Is the truck still under its powertrain warranty?

Re: DTC Code P2463 Duramax DPF Filter - Soot Accumulation

P2463 is a common one when the DPF starts clogging up. On my Duramax I eventually did the full delete with a complete kit. Huge improvement, no more soot codes, lower EGTs and the truck pulls stronger. I went with thedpfdeletekits.com for the hardware and it has been running great with no issues since the tune.

Re: DTC Code P2463 Duramax DPF Filter - Soot Accumulation

I apologize for not following up the original post with an update. I always try to do that, and encourage others to do the same. Hopefully this will help someone out in the future. (Caution, long read).
I had previously installed the Torque app on my phone, (I believe it was a one-time $4.95 cost), which turns your phone into a fairly sophisticated scan tool. I also had to buy an OBD II Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the diagnostic port, to connect the phone to the vehicle. (I bought a Vgate iCar Pro OBD2 Bluetooth diagnostic scanner interface on Amazon for $29).

The dealer wanted me to bring the truck in and leave it with them, and pay an upfront diagnostic charge of $169 before any work was done.
Some digging on various forums dedicated to Duramax powered trucks led me to the solution: I bought and downloaded a "plug-in" (software upgrade) for the Torque app, called BiScan for GM. $25 on the app store. This plug-in was developed by a GM engineer for the Duramax diesel trucks. It opens up a bunch of additional features for the Torque app. It lets you monitor pretty much everything on a DMax. You can monitor the duty cycle of each fuel injector, (including the "9th Injector" that cleans the DPF during the Regen cycle by spraying fuel into the exhaust stream), you can see all 4 Exhaust Gas Temp sensors in real-time, the Turbo Vane Angle, Pre and Post EGR coolant temps, DPF soot load in grams, miles since last Regen, even the total number of Regen cycles in the truck's lifetime, just a ton of stuff it gives you access to.
The main reason I needed that plug-in, is it allows you to initiate a Forced Regen cycle, (I think it was called a Service Regen). By this time the DPF was nearly clogged completely. Since you can only perform the Service Regen while parked, not driving, it told me to get the engine up to normal operating temp, park, open the hood and all 4 windows, and turn the heater on full blast, (to assist with the engine cooling). I did all that, then hit the Service Regen mode and it immediately went into a regen with a much higher idle speed than the normal regen, (it ramped up to around 2,000-2500 RPM), and it took about 20 minutes to complete. And the problem was solved. Over 5 years later, truck is still going strong, 184K miles, all factory stock.
Note: I did figure out why the issue happened - A few weeks earlier, the MIL / Check Engine light came on. It was the number 4 Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor, (which is located in the DPF filter). I was stupid, and drove the truck for 2 weeks before I replaced that sensor. (And it was a quick, easy and inexpensive fix). But that fault kept the truck from going into the Regen mode, so it allowed the soot level to build up too far, and by the time I replaced the sensor the DPF was too clogged up for a normal Regen to effectively clean it. Lesson learned!
