Engines with timing chains on rear ends?
Why do some engines have timing chains on rear ends? That is where transmissions/transaxles are attached to.

Re: Engines with timing chains on rear ends?
Many engines have a transmission attached by an inverted link ("timing") chain. One of the first modern examples of that was Oldsmobile Toronado in 1964.
As for chain as a final drive, that's been around for over 120 years. Up until 1960, Honda was still using chain drive as its main transmission on their S600.

Re: Engines with timing chains on rear ends?
I'm referring to timing chains that drive camshafts, not transmissions. There was a video of a man disassembling an engine that came out of 2022 Audi S5 vehicle. The engine overheated, causing block or heads to warp.

Re: Engines with timing chains on rear ends?
Okay. Yep, at least Ford has done something similar on some of the Explorers.
