Am I crazy?

I am considering (well, all i can think about) buying an old muscle car, and turning it into a dragster... i'm thinking along the lines of a camaro, or maybe a cutlass, and i have a few others in mind.

well basicly, anyone i attempt to talk to about this says i'm crazy, and should leave drag racing to the pros.

I think that I would be able to pull off 700 hp with a camaro, and if i do what i can to lose weight I think i would be pretty damned fast.

I don't know much about drag racing, just that i love speed and this seems like the best/safest way (rather than drag racing some losers at a road filled with cops and oncoming cars).

What would be the 'standard' if you will of muscle car drag races? what type of hp/trq, and times will I be up against? (including, and not including nos).

.

I wouldn't go with a Camaro. I'd say if you wanted something from Chevy to go with a Nova or a Chevelle.

yeah

Well go with what YOU like, I can't force you to like another car. Just giving advice. If the 69 Camaro SS appeals to you the most, then go for it. It's not like a Camaro can't be made to be fast as hell.

If your serious about geting into drag racing you only need a body to keep the bugs out of your teeth....anything will work...some better than others but all can be made to work with enough time and money.

The cheapest route is with an old Mopar, the A bodies Dart, Duster early Barracudas and the like...they have good rear ends if you find one with a 8 3/4, the stock suspension is already set up for drag racing and the Uni-Body lends itself to a sawzall without comprimising the strength of the chassis. The engines are bullet tough and if you can find a good machinest you can build huge HP from the stock Forged Cranks, super tough rods, great heads and valve trains.

The Chevy's are a simpler project only because everybody's got one and parts are plentiful.

We build them all....Ford, Chevy and Mopar, dollar for dollar we always make more HP from the budget Mopars than the others.

If you really want to make 700 HP all motor your gonna have to get out the big checkbook and be prepard to leave it out......the maintainence on a motor like that is HIGH and constant. Our Blown, Alcohol, Chevy Powered, 41 Willy's, AA/Gas car costs nearly a $1000 a pass over a year....We have a 85/360 Dodge Ram Pick-up that makes 720 HP on our Dyno with a 200 shot of giggle juice...we drive it to the track....you don't even want to know what it cost to put that beast together

We also have a pair of early A body Cudas...a 64 and a 66, the 64 is a 340 4 speed car runs high 9's and the 66 is a 318 that runs in the mid 11's...both extremely fast and extremely consistant.

Our other cars include a 78 Chevy Pick-up 355, 65 Satelite 400 and my wife runs our 86 Dodge 360 Pick-up tow truck in Sportsman.....and does well!

Drag Racing IS for Professionals....and that my friend is "YOU"..like any other sport it takes practice and patience while your learning...the rewards of winning that first event are well worth the effort...or you can sit at home and watch Football all day Sunday....Yawn......

If your serious....I'd be more than willing to help you get started, teach you the ropes, the phycology and the secrets of Drag Racing as we know them anyhow.

Our new toll free number is 1-TOO-TOO-QUIK it should be hooked by the end of this month ...we're waiting on some new equipment to arrive.

I'm Don, and you can call me Monday-Friday.....I'm at some track somewhere every weekend.

Our new web site is up although we just started contruction on it so it doesn't have much on it right now...i'll be posting my tech articles soon so bookmark it.

its not to hard to get in to drag racing but your getting in to some problems trying to find a good old car to drag race it just keeps getting harder and harder finding a unrestored car thats not rusty or wrecked and aint good enough to restore. i bought 2 67 bucks grand sports a 340 and a 400 car to race and just because they were in to good of shape to butcher i just restored them, ive still got them but i only use them for shows. i did end up finding a few others but they were to rotted out to use so i went for the next best thing, a 80s g body. you can pick them up for as little as 100 bucks, heck i was even given a 85 cutlass one time, and they have a full frame. my fist drag car was a 86,442 with a 403 from a TA i had a forged crank and rods put in along with flat top pistons, a cradle, ported and polished edelbrock aluminum small block olds castings with a 790 q jet and a . 560 lift cam all that was backed by a 700r4 and a 8.5 inch posi rear with 3.73s. ive still got that car to but i only run it to shows any more. it was running low 13s with a bad trans. my newest little toy is a 87 grand national. if you want a relatively cheap drag car get a turbo buick. a good t type will set you back about 5-6k for one that needs a little work, about 7-10 for a grand national but expect to pay up to 20k for either of them cars in really good shape with low miles and upwards of 90k for a low miles gnx. the reason i like turbo buicks so much is there cheap to do mods, you can get them running 12.5s with just an adjustable wastegate and 100 octane fuel as for going faster there's a few recipes for 11 second cars for only 1500 bucks like Jeff fox's grand national. as far as the driving aspect of it goes, it will take a little practice but there's no greater satisfaction of cutting a good light and winning a race

heres some web pages with some good g body info.
