How do I fix overhead DVD and/or remove an aftermarket overhead DVD player from a 2015 GMC Yukon?

I dont know if this is a pretty standard process or if you all would need to know the make and model of the DVD player. Maybe some of you would know why its having a problem. Some days, the DVD player works just fine. But, more times than not, when the car is running, the power light on the DVD player is red. If I push the power button, it changes to blue (which means its on), but then immediately turns back red and remains off.

The DVD player to the ceiling is really loose. It would be nice to tighten it up. But, does it really make sense, if the looseness was causing a wiring issue, why would it still have power when it won't work? (The light is red, but it takes power to make the light red.)

So, for one, I need to know the correct way to remove the DVD player from the ceiling so I don't break things worse than they are now.

Two, does anyone have suggestions on what I can do to fix the existing setup? It doesn't make sense to me that the key switching wire is messed up. If the car is off, all the leds on the player are off, not red.

I figure if I get it off the ceiling and still don't see why its having issues, looks like I can get a new unit for less than $200. The power, switching and ground wires are already ran, so it shouldn't be too much work to swap it.

Re: How do I fix overhead DVD and/or remove an aftermarket overhead DVD player from a 2015 GMC Yukon?

I understand your frustration with the overhead DVD player in your 2015 GMC Yukon. Let’s break down how to both fix the existing unit and safely remove it if needed.

Step 1: Diagnosing the Problem

Loose Mounting
The looseness of the DVD player could indeed be causing intermittent power issues due to a poor connection. Here’s how you can tighten it:

1. Inspect the Mounting Screws: Carefully remove the plastic cover or bezel around the DVD player. This usually just snaps off, but use a plastic trim tool to avoid damaging it.
2. Tighten Screws: Check the screws that hold the unit to the ceiling. Tighten them if they’re loose. Ensure the unit is securely fastened to prevent movement.

Electrical Connection Issues
Given the symptoms (power light changing colors but not staying on), it sounds like there might be a wiring or power issue:

1. Check Wiring Connections: With the unit removed from the ceiling, inspect all wiring connections. Look for any loose or frayed wires. The power issue might be due to a poor ground connection or a loose power wire.
2. Wiring Harness: Ensure the wiring harness is securely connected. Sometimes the connectors can come loose over time.

Step 2: Removing the DVD Player

If you decide to remove the DVD player, follow these steps to do it safely:

1. Disconnect the Battery: To avoid any electrical issues, disconnect the negative terminal of the car battery.
2. Remove Plastic Trim: Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pry off the plastic trim around the DVD player.
3. Unscrew the Unit: Locate the screws holding the DVD player in place. These are usually Phillips-head screws. Remove them carefully.
4. Disconnect Wires: Once the unit is loose, gently pull it down to access the wiring. Disconnect the power, ground, and any other wires connected to the DVD player. Note or label each wire for easy reinstallation.

Replacing the DVD Player

If you decide to replace the unit, here's how to install a new one:

Mounting: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mounting the new unit. Typically, this involves securing it with screws in the same location as the old one.

Wiring: Connect the power, ground, and any other necessary wires according to the new unit’s instructions. Since the wiring is already run, this should be straightforward.

Testing: Before securing everything, reconnect the battery and test the new DVD player to ensure it functions correctly.

Final Installation: Once confirmed working, secure the unit fully and replace any trim pieces.

Additional Tips:

Reference Manual: If possible, refer to the user manual of the DVD player for specific instructions or troubleshooting tips.

---

By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and fix the problem with your overhead DVD player or replace it with a new unit. If you have any further questions or run into any issues, feel free to ask!

Best,
