Call the dealer parts guy. They are usually pretty helpful.

It's a long-distance call from Italy.

Re: Ac compressor

Hi. Do you believe it is possible to replace clutch bearing without take off the entire compressor? I would try that before. What do you think? Thanks

Re: Ac compressor

Last 2 or 3 Trailblazers I worked on- for a/c inop- had the air gap too wide- a/c voltage was at clutch on compressor- just could not draw that armature drive plate in against the spinning pulley face. Answer has been simple- remove the drive plate 10mm nut and wiggle loose the plate that is on a splined shaft. then carefully remove any and all shims in behind. Throw the thickest shim over your shoulder and replace clutch drive plate with remaining shims if any. Now air gap is back to speck and compressor will run another 5 yrs.

Can be done while a/c compressor is still on vehicle and charge does not have to be removed.

If this is not your issue- please ignore....

Re: Ac compressor

Fine.. thanks for your super detailed analysis.. by the way what was the symptom for the defect you found? My compressor is a little little bit noisy when clutch engages. Could your theory fit for me?

Re: Ac compressor

It will probably be easier to identify the compressor by its part number instead of the vehicle VIN.

Any reciprocating compressor will emit some noise when operating due to valves. If the noise is impulsive, that could be normal. If the noise is knocking or grinding, that could be a mechanical noise from a bearing or piston. If the A/C system has been serviced, was the oil replaced?

With the engine off, can you grasp the hub of the compressor clutch and turn it by hand? If so, can you feel any grinding from a bearing?

Re: Ac compressor

Is the noise there when the compressor is not running, and quiet when it runs?

Re: Ac compressor

Sorry if I answer so late but automotive forums mails ended up in my spam..
By the way:
- noise present when clutch engages
- no service on ac system at all since ten years at least, no leaks, works great
- I can spin pulley freely, no bearing game but a really light hiss
- I can spin compressor by hand, not freely but not stuck, seems correct to me
Looking closer at the compressor, bearing should work when clutch is off so it is not my case.. not lucky.
