Alternate Flocking Technique Tutorial

Carpet flocking can be challenging for some, here is an alternate technique, and one which I use
Enjoy!

Re: Alternate Flocking Technique Tutorial

Excellent stuff! I'm currently building a Suzuki Samurai and the only thing stopping me completing the build is the flocking! Can't seem to get it right yet with other cars I can do the flocking no problem!

Will give this a go for sure many thanks!

I can see using this for floor mats and dash pads, trunk liners and underhood insulation. thanks for the tip!

Nice technique. You can also get some fuzzy paper at most craft stores for this. They sell it in various colors and its very thin and easy to apply.

Yes, works very well for those items too, floor mats cut out are easily adhered to the base carpet, with just a couple dots of glue to underside

For under engine hood lining, I like to use layered masking tape, it has a smoother surface & more realistic of production car material, yet has a slight grain to it still, and not fuzzy as the flocking/carpet would be
Use multiple layers, to build up thickness, then you can cut out to shape directly on (unpainted) hood, other cut-out details then are easily added, to simulate any other patterns or shapes or steps like production liner might have
It then can be painted flat or satin black, and CA glued along edges to secure in place & you're set

There is, here the crafts stores is not as commonly carried
Some felts and velor fabric materials work well too, depending on scale

Do you do anything to keep it from rolling up when working with it?

From the tape rolling up? I never have had it do that, but when I lay down the upside down strips (before flocking applied), I just use a transverse piece of tape on each end to hold them flat while flocking and cutting
The nice thing about masking tape, is that once the flocking applied, it will bend, and shape to corners or ridges

Re: Alternate Flocking Technique Tutorial

Great technique. I like the fact that it will take the shape of the surface that is beneath it. Nice

Re: Alternate Flocking Technique Tutorial

Would this work on Seats? They have much more complex shapes and curves...

I also need some texture on the steering wheels, any ideas for this?

Thanks,

Wouldn't work so much for seats nor a steering wheel, but also the grain of the flocking would look more extreme on either of those

A more traditional method for a grainy surface on those, is to spray on paint lightly from a further distance than usual, and only in light amount (not a covering coat), to form a stippled effect, it works quite well especially in flat colours
