Re: Porsche 917LH Martini

Fantastic masking and painting work and not an easy colour scheme to mask out for sure. Really though I think the only way to go. Trying to wrap decals around those complex curves would not have yielded a good result. As the old saying goes "Nothing follows a curve as good as paint"

Re: Porsche 917LH Martini

Guys, thanks for your comments!

This is my masking technique, maybe this can be useful for someone...

First step is to copy the original decal sheet

Cut the masking tape and place over the decal you want to be masked, in this example the red color. (this is the first layer)

Cut another piece of masking tape and place over the first masking tape. (this is the second layer)

Cut the mask with precision

This is the mask already cut

What interest to us is the second layer of masking tape. It'll unglue very easily.

Use your reference pictures to place the mask in the correct position. Press the mask with your fingers so it'll adhere very well.

ADVICE

After placing the mask, apply a very thin layer of clear coat (or lacquer). The main goal of this thin layer is to "seal" the mask, it will avoid that the paint will leak under the mask.

Regards,
Denilson

Re: Porsche 917LH Martini

Well done,a rearly impresive model,a better finish than the orignal! Can l ask why you have painted the wheels in an aluminium finish? l have not seen that car with wheels in that colour. In the original picture you showed of the car being painted the wheels are very batterd and have lots of metal showing through the matt black finish, but l am sure they would have been black. If you have pictures showing themm in an aluminium finish l would be very happy to see them.

I painted gun metal, not aluminum. Probably not correct for this specific car, but other 917 used this color...
