Re: chirp from front wheel bearing?

this is my exact plan for tonight. Having a 16 yr old new driving daughter has now decreased my repair times.. tho this IS a good reason to say no to a request for the vehicle

Re: chirp from front wheel bearing?

tempfixit, you win the prize for the day. The chirp was back with a vengeance a day ago so I took the van out for a drive, when it was full chirp I stopped and pulled the hubcap off. Voila! sound stops... not being a sucker for this anymore, I reinstall the cap and (thank GAWD) the chirp comes back. So, it turns out that the metal spring ring which holds the hubcap in place was rubbing or flexing or... Anyway, I've posted elsewhere here that I bought some junkyard parts (hubcap being 1 of the items) and replaced the squeeker...

Thinking back after I replaced the hub, I took the van for a drive without the cap on so obviously that's why I'd thought I'd cured the problem. The hub was in need of replacement when I compared it to the new one so I'm not upset that I did that part...

I'm still not going to be completely convinced until my wife and daughter drive the van...somehow they just seem to cause these problems to occur!!

Re: chirp from front wheel bearing?

I would never have thought of a hubcap as the source of the chirp, jeez. I don't have hubcaps (alloy wheels) so I never dealt with this... at least not as a grownup. As kids there was a really mean old man living up the street who drove an enormous Chrysler Newport or New Yorker from the late 60's or early seventies, it was a really huge car but common in those days (1975'ish). His hubcaps had small square holes all around the rim and we'd drop pebbles or even marbles in there and when h'ed drive away... a heck of a racket, drove him nuts
