WIP: 1/20 1977 Tyrrell 007 Japan GP (Studio 27)
After the last project of building Tamiya's Ferrari F189 with all the pleasures of fit and accuracy (apart from the slightly smaller engine ;-) I hold my breath and grit my teeth and move onto the Studio 27's 1977 Tyrrell from the Japan GP. I wanted an older car next to move away from the pesky c/f decal application and also I really love the colour scheme of the car which is a far cry from the plane blue we are normally accustomed to on older Tyrrell's.
So a few web finds of the car Im building... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I am going to add my usual amount of extra details however I'm thinking finding decent reference pictures of the car is gonna be a real headache so we'll see how it goes. I have to say (so far!!!) I'm impressed (and slightly relieved) by the quality of the fit with this kit, very un-resin like, all the main body panels and wing elements fit together very well, the cowling surrounding the driver comes in two halves (reminds me a lot of the P34 one) and went together very well indeed with only minimal sanding and filling. The same is to be said of the airbox above the drivers head, again this comes in two halves and once again was extremely neat when glued together. The front end needed the wing elements adding and the end plates and then was good to go, a little clean up was needed here but nothing major once again. So here's what you get in the kit... ![]() and my progress so far, engine and trans went together very well indeed with no dramas, it all looks very similar to Tamiya mouldings I have to say... it is also great to be working with a good old Ford DFV unit again... ![]() ![]() I've spent ages trying to sort references with absolutely no luck, the Duke 1977 F1 Review DVD, whilst extremely nostalgic to watch is no help, Ive gone through all my F1 Modeling issues and there is nothing in there too, gonna have to make the best of what I've got I think. I'm sure a lot of the guts of the car will be identical to the P34 so maybe I can use that as a reference. I have come across a few other good shots of the car in action but none whatsoever of it stationary in the pits showing it's insides. Anyway, the last of my progress. With the rear wing it was a very good fit straight from the box with only a little clean up of the white metal centre sections. The end plates are obviously etched. Apart from a few small details and painting the rear light I've finished it. Rather than use the whole decal I decided to spray the black centre section and then cutout the 'Dunlop' wording and the two red and yellow side sections. All in all it's worked well... ![]() ![]() The main engine block and transmission have been sprayed and I have began work on the latter. Aluminium was the chosen colour for the main engine block and a darker grey metallic for the transmission tunnel. I have taken apart an old P34 in order to use some of the matching parts which are much better in terms of detail than S27's white metal versions. Here I have used the Tamiya brake discs and added some Acu-stion etched faces to it. I also drilled the vents into the edge as you can see. A little piping was then added to both the brake disks and also the starter at the rear. ![]() I have ordered some 70s suspension units as the kit ones are average and the eaftermarket ones will really stand out as they are so on show. I have already made a decent amount of progress on the engine block. As I mentioned earlier I am managing to use quite a few plastic parts from old Tamiya kits, this kit does not come with the injectors or any plumbing for the plug leads and so I took these directly from an old Lotus 78 kit. My old spares box contains a lot of memories (as well as some very rough examples too... most were done back in the 80s in my early teens!!!). However now it really is a box full of goodies that helps me with detailing these lesser kits. ![]() For the injectors - with a little care and a considerable amount of patience it is possble to drill these out in order to fasten some clear nylon thread on to them for the fuel lines. First of all I had to drill the main unit in order to accept the S27 Trumpets... ![]() then with an even finer drill bit and the pin vice I drilled out the arms to take the thread... ![]() and so where we are now with the plug leads and fuel lines added... ![]() ![]() the black top pieces were sprayed flat black and then given a very light sand to bring up the rivets and wording. I've now got a little jiggery pokery to do to get the Trumpets to fit with the Air box top but nothing too taxing... hopefully ![]() thanks for following along

Definitely in on this thread! Did you actually finish the Ferrari? Or did I miss it?
Good start on this one, I like it. I am getting more and more into the F1 cars from the past, the stories from the 60s, 70s and 80s are fascinating (I was born in 1990, so obviously I missed out on all these beauties). Anyway, looking forward to the next update! |

Re: WIP: 1/20 1977 Tyrrell 007 Japan GP (Studio 27)
More progress...
Engine & trans are completed, used the Top Studio suspension units which have made a big improvement over the white metal moulded versions. ![]() ![]() and in place... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Added a couple of coats to two parts clear to the Rear Wing and Airbox, these are now both finished... ![]() ![]() I started work on adding detail to the cockpit next, there is a considerable amount missing here. First up I scratch built this footwell cover from plasticard. Due to the lack of really good references for the actual cockpit Im just going to use MFH's pics of their kit and details... ![]() Also added the fire extinguisher with added hose and fastenings and a gate for the gear lever made from left over etch sprue... ![]() The dashboard is basic at best, I will add a lot here... ![]() finally, to enable me to incorporate the missing chassis framework at the front of the car under the front wing - I had to remove a good portion of the underside, pretty sure this will give me enough room now to scratch build the internals. ![]() more again soon and thanks as always for following

Looking good Sean! Shaping up to be a nice build :-). You seem to be building alot faster than me, looks like you're working pretty efficient!

Re: WIP: 1/20 1977 Tyrrell 007 Japan GP (Studio 27)
update...
the final engine pieces are the exhausts, these will be plain black with some weathering and staining. I started out by drilling out the tailpipes... ![]() have now sprayed these and the main pipes flat black and will start the weathering tomorrow. Probably my weakest area so really want to try and achieve a realistic result this time  also, the paint and decals are on... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() will let this all dry a few days and then get some Zero two part clear over it all. finally, the dashboard is taking shape... ![]() not sure if I'm totally happy with this and may re-do it before it gets attached to the cockpit. thanks as always for your comments.

What? No comments? I'd be happy with just that engine/transmission/suspension assembly.

Very nice Sean! The bodywork looks really clean! How did you make the switches on the dash? Thin wire?

Re: WIP: 1/20 1977 Tyrrell 007 Japan GP (Studio 27)
nearly done...
![]() and attached to the chassis, I added the exhaust securing springs and also the two cooling pipes to the radiators... ![]() one of the last stages is the missing front end framework under the front wing. I've managed to scratch together the majority of it however due to the thickness and make up of the white metal part and limited room available I can't include it all sadly, still better than nothing me thinks... ![]() and so, nearly completed pics... I completed the wiring behind the dash with as much as was possible while keeping it neat and tidy, there is actually a battery that sits on under the front wing as well as the extinguisher, however I havent enough room to fit one it. Only a few more little details to add and a little work behind the roll bar and she's finished. I will post completed pics up next... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() thanks as always Sean

Very nice Sean! I can't believe how fast you build this one. And it even has all these details! I would have taken me half a year, at least.
![]() Have you already decided what your next project will be? Regards, Wessel |
