real odometer different than carfax

Vehicle: Dodge Nitro 2008 SLT.

i've been hunting for a dodge nitro here in baghdad and i am running into all sorts of surprises.

at first i subscribed to Autocheck.com and while it works ok i found the car i trusted according to autocheck.com had a different story on carfax.com.

the black Nitro SLT showed a clean record on Autocheck.com and didnt have a last odometer reading.
On the car itself it showed 38 thousand miles.

for the last 3 days i've showed the car to a few of my friends. each saying its a nice car however it just didnt sit right in the feeling department.

i decided then to bite the bullet and run it on carfax.com
lo and behold the results are more in depth now -- carfax showed the last reading of 80,064 miles.
and then it showed on 06/06/2010 that it was at an auto auction in in Spring, TX then finally sold by Fleet Management Co. on the same date.
No mention of the price.

Now. like i said earlier on the car itself here in baghdad it shows 38 thousand.
Whats going on here?

I am trying to get the story and understand whats happening.

on a second note the seller currently says the front fender has been repainted although it looks ok. whats also odd is we had a dust storm a few days ago -- all the cars at the dealer have been washed except this one is sitting in its dust as if to hide something.
nevertheless and again the car looks "good"

can someone help me out here?

Re: real odometer different than carfax

So is it really crucial checking for the odometer of a car? I have never considered such deep aspects while purchasing any vehicle for me. There are certain points which I always take care of at the time of selecting a car for me. But as you have mentioned, it’s really helpful checking the odometer as well. So next time will surely keep this thing in mind. Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
