transmissions, why is there a difference between Overhaul capacity and service refill capacity?
Sorry for the nooby question, but why are there two fluid capacities? One is dependent on whether you go by the O/H Overhaul capacity, and the other on the service refill capacity.
Whats the difference between the two, and why are they different? |

Re: transmissions, why is there a difference between Overhaul capacity and service refill capacity?
Welcome to the forum!
When a transmission is overhauled, it is completely drained in the process, including the torque converter, cooler lines, and any other areas where fluid can puddle. When you "service" the fluid and filter, you are not draining the torque converter, cooler and lines, or anything that is not residing in the pan or filter. As you've probably noticed, there is a lot of fluid contained in the torque converter and cooler. -Rod |

Engines have a listing for "overhaul" as well. You never get all the oil out unless you disassemble and clean everything.
