Alero Mileage

Hey all,

I bought a 2002 v6 3.4l, 2 door Alero about 2 weeks ago. The car has 113,800 miles on it.

I think I should be getting better fuel economy than I am currently. I filled it up and reset the trip. I'm at 200kms and down to 1/4 tank. Is everyone getting roughly the same mileage?

The service engine light and ABS light come on periodically as well. I have read through the forums and am going to check the wheel hub and sensors. Could a bad 02 sensor be causing this as well?

Thanks

Re: Alero Mileage

To add to my previous post.

I know the rear brake pads need to be replaced. Would that contribute to the ABS light?

Re: Alero Mileage

Rear pads being worn would not cause ABS light to come on. Have you figured what your actual mileage is?

Re: Alero Mileage

I usually get ~25 mpg in town, and 29-30 on highway. (2000 Alero 3.4L, 4-dr). You could try getting your codes read for free at an autoparts store. They typically can't read ABS codes, but would tell you the code associated with the service-engine-soon light.

Re: Alero Mileage

My actual mileage is 16 mpg, I drive mainly just to work and back in the city. No led foot, I drive respectfully. Only using the power when I need it ie. passing. I'm going to check the codes tomorrow as my friend has a diagnostic scanner. I'll post back tomorrow, thanks for the help!

Re: Alero Mileage

Scanner came up with nothing. I'm assuming it's the wheel bearing on the passenger side. Is the bearing inside the wheel hub assembly or can it be swapped with out a new hub?

I re-did my math for the mileage and I'm getting 18.9 mpg. Right around where it should be. I'll probably replace to 02 sensors anyways since they have never been changed after 113 000 kms.

Thanks

Re: Alero Mileage

The hub and bearing come as an assembly. Remove caliper bracket and rotor, axle nut, three bolts retaining the hub assy, disconnect the ABS sensor.
