Here is a picture of one of the most valuable McLaren models, the silver xp1lm by UT in original box.

I've had some help on making those decals on some of my racer customs btw.

Re: Most paid for a McLaren model

They are good jobs, but why would you paint an LM green? And those wheels on the black car...why did you buy a model that is not like the real thing?

I really like the silver/orange one. Very nice.

Yeah, I meant to write GTR. What I am asking about is the paint job, not the type of McLaren it is. GTRs had all sorts of sponsor stickers on them, and if you took those off, they came in pretty nice colors or color schemes, none of which were this bright green. So, just curious, why paint it that color? It doesn't seem particularly appealing.

Actually, according to what I've heard lime green was one of the colors suggested to the LM originally.

I also like green very much and just had to do a custom in that color.
The black one you referred to the rims on earlier has BMW GTR/740 wheels.
It also has high mirrors if you study the pic.

Re: Most paid for a McLaren model

Cool, thanks for the answer(s). Can't say I like the green, so I am glad they didn't make any real LMs in that color. Interestingly, the GTR has a windshield banner that says F1LM?

I know, had to use some spares to complete this model that time, it's a mix of both the LM and GTR.

Re: Most paid for a McLaren model

Hey everybody,

I'm digging up this old thread because I thought it would be a good place for my question. I have wanted a model for a good while now, but have always put it off until I get all the books and brochures that have been more of a priority in my collecting. Now I feel I can finally pursue a model. The one I'm interested in is the West 1/43 promotional model. The problem is that we now have a gazillion different versions of the same model all over the place and it's difficult to know what your getting. It has to be the correct model and it has to be in the correct box with the correct model number. Problem is if you have the correct box and number, how do you know the correct model is in the box? Does anyone have an answer that could help, maybe some specific detailed info together with pictures of what I need? if anyone has one they would sell me please send me a PM, but I would have to have solid proof that it's the one. I do know the prices for them are not what they used to be, they have come way down as I have seen a few sell for much less than when prices were spiked when they were first released. I'm not going to pay those old original prices for one. I want one, but I'm not desperate. If someone could help I'd appreciate it.

Please send me a PM.

Thank you gentleman,

Mike

Re: Most paid for a McLaren model

I haven't purchased any of the Minichamps 1/43rd scale GTRs yet but the best advice I can offer since there is some chance for variance with that particular model is to purchase one from someone you can trust.

Re: Most paid for a McLaren model

Mike;

What goes about the Minichamps West promo model, the most of the fakes are done by using the BPR 1995 Nurburgring East #8 (Minichamps cat# 530 154305) as the basis as it is a otherwise similar to the actual West promo model, just the East/West decals are different. The difficulty has been to get the correct kind of West decals to replace the East decals and many times on those fakes the decals aren't the correct size or they have wrong colors as the correct ones have light golden and red "stripes" behind the text but in some of the fakes the golden stripe is grey like on the West McLaren Mercedes Formula One cars.

Another failure has typically been that the front West decal, even if correct size and colors, has been missing the "McLaren" badge in the middle of the decal.

The outer carton in the authentic one does not "have" the catalogue number (530 154308) but has a green tape (almost similar color as the carton) on the place of the number. The rumors are that the correct box would be the Jacadi #7 box (530 154307) if the tape is removed. This is because the models where promotional items that were given away and not sold. There are also rumors about the quantity those promo models were made from around 200 to even 1000. Normally those old Minichamps GTRs were made around 1000-1500 each, but as the West promo model is very similar to the East #8, the quantity may have been lower than the usual as they most probably were done in a same batch of that 1000-1500 altogether.

Current values of an authentic mint model in a mint original package are perhaps around 700-800 usd, depending also on the seller's credibility. Last authentic one in such a condition I've seen on eBay few years ago went for around 650 usd. After that there has been only few authentic ones, but not in a mint condition and typically without the correct packaging. Those have been going for around 250-500 usd.

Here are some pictures of the real one with the box (not mine as I am not that particular fan of this model for such values it holds and instead prefer other more accurate models):

And for comparison, East #8 (not my photos):

Hope this helps you to find what you're looking for!
