92 Buick Regal Custom 3.8 Stalling/ not start.

Ok, I have the series one 3800 when i drive for about half hour car dies, wont restart for 15-30 minutes depending on the temp outside. I've replaced the coil packs, Ignition module, spark plugs, spark plug wires. I just found out today that the ignition module isnt getting power to give the car spark to start when i dies. i need to know what part would make my car do this. i have been driving the car like this for 2 years. always restarts.

Which wire did you test to determine "the ignition module isnt getting power to give the car spark to start when i dies"?.

Those symptoms are very consistent with a bad crankshaft position sensor. However, I'd think it would eventually just quit working altogether long before two years has passed.

Re: 92 Buick Regal Custom 3.8 Stalling/ not start.

we just checked off of the coil packs. there was no spark once o ever. the only problem with it being the crankshaft position is that the harmonic ballancer needs to be taken off and one of the pully puller wholes is stripped so i cant pull it off evenly is there a different way i can take the puller off???

Re: 92 Buick Regal Custom 3.8 Stalling/ not start.

Before you start jumping the gun on the crank sensor, are you getting an RPM signal? No spark could either be the crank sensor or the ICM......

An old trick I used was, with the engine not running, look for the pedestal that holds the crank sensor.....using a long extension, tap the pedestal, NOT THE SENSOR......practice this several times, until good at it.....because you have to do this while the car is running, and you have to be very careful of that serp belt.....if you lightly tap the pedestal, and the car stumbles or dies, it's the crank sensor....this is not fool proof, just like the tap test on a PCM/ECM....nothing may happen and it still could be bad...

Yes it could be the Ignition Control Module isn't getting a signal from a position sensor but the problem may not be the sensor. It wasn't on my '96 Regal.
My problem was poorly crimped connector/pin on the position sensor wire at the Ignition Control Module end.
With the engine running, press gently on the 14 or so wires where they go into the connector shell at the ICM and see if the engine stumbles or stalls.
I won't go into the interesting details leading to this discovery but I wrote of it here when it happened a few years ago. Do a search of my posts for it.
