1991 Buick Regal 3.8 stalling / no start hot
Just wanted to share my recent experience in hopes of helping someone. I own a 91 Regal Gran Sport with 146,000 miles on the original 3.8 v-6. Wow, what an awesome drivetrain. No oil consumption and tranny shifts like new.
I recently took my car into a local garage for a starting and stalling problem I had. This all began with stalling when cold. After the 3rd or 4th start it would stay running and drive fine. Problem progressed to where a couple of times it would not start when hot and would have to cool before it would start again, but even then it was a challenge. By the way, I did have good spark when it would not start so I suspected a fuel problem.
I read many posts on this site and thought about it awhile of what to do. I even bought a factory service manual off ebay, but still not sure what to do. Because I was afraid of being stranded somewhere, I took it to a local referred garage. Found out my fuel pressure was at about 20 psi. New delco pump (garage stated to use a delco pump and not aftermarket), new pulsator, new locking ring, and new pick up tube sock. Total bill, $235.00 and car runs great.
I recently watched by daughters boyfriend spend his weekend home from college replacing cap, rotor, plugs, wires, catalytic convertors, and becoming more and more frustrated. I tried to help him but I was stumped as well, had a miss in the engine. I am a do it yourself mechaninc and have many years of do it yourself experience. I have rebuilt motors, trannys, swapped motors, trannys, transfer cases, rear ends, you name it. The one lesson I have learned, when you are troubleshooting a driveability problem and you do not know what you are doing, do not try throwing parts on your car in hopes that it will fix your problem. Guessing is expensive! Take it to someone who KNOWS what they are doing if you can find someone you can trust. There are a few out there. Good Luck.
