98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Steering Column Filler

Hey everybody, I'm trying to gain access to the temp actuator on the driver's side, I have a small diagram and some step by step instructions but I'm stuck at the steering column filler. The steps that I have say that there are 4 regular screws and possibly 2 smaller ones. I have removed 4 regular ones and the piece doesn't budge; I have tried to locate others but have not been able to as of yet. Can anyone give me some detailed assistance on removing this piece, thanks.

Re: 98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Steering Column Filler

I didn't. The instructions I was following did not have that mentioned and it doesn't look to be a factor. This is what I was following.

Removal Procedure

1.Remove the left instrument panel insulator (this is the carpeted cardboard piece above the brake pedal that connects to the knee bolster)

2.Remove the knee bolster (this is the pad below the steering column)

3.Remove the steering column filler (this is the metal piece behind the knee bolter, under the steering colum) (4 larger bolts, and I think 2 smaller ones)

4.Disconnect the electrical connector from the temperature actuator.

5.Remove the HVAC Con (HVAC Control) MiniFuse #27 from the IP electrical center.

6.Remove the mounting bolts from the temperature actuator.

7.Remove the temperature actuator.

Is this the automatic dual zone climate control setup? If it is, it is the same as mine, and I was able to gain access to it by removing the bottom piece like you did already and then laying on my back on the floor and reaching up with my left hand. It was basically done by feel. It requires some patience.

It is automatic, so you think I should be ok without removing that metal plate? (steering column filler)

Thanks

Re: 98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Steering Column Filler

well I finally removed it but the actuator seems to be working ok on both sides. but i'm still having the same issue, warm air on the driver's side and a little cooler on the passenger's side. Also the steps I was following mentioned removing the HVAC control fuse if I was going to remove the actuator, but when I checked there wasn't a fuse there. Any thoughts?

Thanks.
