99 SL2 Clutch wearing out
So working with my brother in law on a 1999 saturn SL2 5 speed. It has 150k or so and the clutch went out. Seems reasonable. Then we get a repair manual and it says to remove the engine to get to the clutch. After inspecting it, we agree and do the job. 3 guys, 12 hours and it is good to go. It ran great for 3 months, now the NEW clutch is worn out again. This time it had a loud bang and no clutch. Slave cylinder, etc all seem fine. Inspection of the clutch, it is gone. It has large pcs of the clutch material visible. Now that we think back, the last time, it did have some large pcs of clutch material in the bottom that we had to clean out and throw away. We also installed a new throwout bearing and there was no obvious sign of wear or slipage once the new clutch was installed. If i knew why it was wearing out in 3 months, i might replace it. Not knowing, i am not sure. How could a clutch wear out in 3 months? I have considered the driver but even a terrible driver would struggle to wear one out in 3 months. My brother was driving it the day before and all was fine, no slipping. Next day, bang and no clutch. Any ideas?
We have considered the idea of a bad clutch from autozone too... |

Re: 99 SL2 Clutch wearing out
Did you have the flywheel resurfaced? If not, that may have killed your new clutch.

Re: 99 SL2 Clutch wearing out
No we did not. It looked in really good shape. Even if we did not, do you really think it could eat the clutch in 3 months with no slipping until D-day?
