Toms Supra

Here is my first race car i've made. So far i've primed, sanded and painted shell, just waiting for it to harden up for another wet sand.

I've also done a few bits on the undercarriage which i will try and upload later.

Here is some of the undercarriage started, had a little blunder assembling steering/suspension which means that steering wont work but pleased its not irrecoverable.

Hand painting some of base hence odd coating at back, not completed as yet.

Re: Toms Supra

Been working on this a little more. Very intricately pieced together with the roll cage. Rear suspension is a real pig on this in terms of being really challenging. That said i will persevere...

Couple more pics from today...

Re: Toms Supra

Few more little bits done on the kit.

Started doing a little weathering on the bottom of the kit, shell has been wet sanded and smoothed ready for decals and clear coat. Wheels i need to pluck up courage to paint now at some point. Now begun to do a few odds and sods on the inside of the car also now.

Re: Toms Supra

Done a little bit more today with this one and finally braved a little decal work. Not been to bad as such, ripped one a little but it was salvagable and used a thinner to help the blend in a bit more to the contours. Will let them set and then when i have finished all the other shell bits i will then run over a couple of coats of clear.

Interior is progressing nicely, complex with all the roll cage but i think it is beginning to shape up well. Oven cleaner has gone over the wheels now which have seen the primer and white coat go over them now.

Comments welcome.

Re: Toms Supra

4-5 hours of work and I am at this point. These decals are an absolute pig to do, managed to get most on in one piece with exception of the front wing above which split down. Rewarding seeing it done.

Here are two pics prior to me hopefully not ruining the model with clear coat.

Just have to suss out now how to get the split rims looking good as i'm nervous about painting these up.

Any tips?

Re: Toms Supra

I“ve done this model twice and hand painted the rims. No sweat, the edge of the white area doesn't allow the paint to go anywhere else.
If you airbrush it or spray it, that's a different story...

Re: Toms Supra

The EASIEST way is to use a liquid masking film (such as Micro-Mask or Bob Dively's products) to mask off the "chromed" rims, then paint the entire wheel. Peel of the liquid masking film from the rim section to reveal a perfectly completed split-rim.

Re: Toms Supra

Here are some more or less completed shots. This is only the 5th car model i've made so decals were a pain for me. Perserved though and got a half decent result.

More practice needed, just need to put on wing mirrors and rear diffuser.

Also attempted some minor weathering...

Thoughts?

Re: Toms Supra

Thats great! I have one of these I need to finish. The front on yours doesn't look to be sitting correct though. Looks too high.

I think it's likely the camera angle to be honest. You made me paranoid enough to go and have a second take lol

Re: Toms Supra

Hi there!. Good model, I have one to make here. The weathering looks ok, but I think that it need a little touch of black in general, and have to add some dirt to the wheels and the front part of the rear fender's archs...

Re: Toms Supra

Looks very good.
You've missed something. You have to paint the wheel nuts. It makes a lot of difference

Re: Toms Supra

Chieflongshin - you did a great job for a kit with difficult decals - there is a decal setting solution here in the USA that I have found works great for complicated decals like this. It is called "Solvaset" and it is used by model train people. I find it is better than micro-sol and micro-set. You simply apply the decal to the area - blot off the water apply solvaset to the entire decal with a brush and leave it alone - several hours later you find the decal nicely snugged down and flat - if you cannot find solvaset thru google PM me and I will send a link - good work - John
