99 Intrigue won't crank
Hello, I'm having problems getting my 99 Intrigue to turn over.
Searching this site and others around the net I see that many people are having the same problem. I think mine is a little unique and its because I'm an idiot and did something very stupid. A little back story first: The ignition had been giving me problems for a long time. I had to jiggle the key to get it to unlock and this had become harder and harder to do. Last week after trying for a good half hour, I got pissed off and drilled out the ignition. Lucky for me I guess I left enough of the cylinder intact and the passlock didn't give me any problems and it started right up. I even stopped to get gas and was able to start it again. When I got to work and was having trouble getting the car to turn all the way off (engine was off but I couldn't get the cylinder to rotate all the way to the left to turn off the electrics) so I just disconnected the battery. Big mistake that was. When I came back 9 hours latter it wouldn't turn over. From what I've been able to gather I screwed up the BCM. I tried the reset method where you try to start the car and then let it sit in ACC for 10 minutes and wait for the security light to turn off. My light never turns off. So a quick run down: 1. I drilled out the ignition and was somehow able to leave the passlock system intact. 2. Car started 3. Disconnected the battery 4. Car no longer turns over. 5. 10 min reset procedure didn't work. Steady security light that never goes off (waited about 12 mins) and never flashes. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: 99 Intrigue won't crank
Might try just a new lock cylinder first, then try the reset. That should require you to get a new ignition key unfortunately.
You might double check that reset procedure also, I really thought it required leaving it in the ON position, not the ACC. Also for whats its worth, if you can get the car started, the Passlock system is easy to disable by simply cutting one wire...not necessary to bring power tools into the equation. I personally used a pair of finger nail clippers...

Re: 99 Intrigue won't crank
As said above, no power tools are required for this job, standard tools only.
As for the relearn procedure, you have to turn the key all the way to start. The engine shouldn't rotate. The key should then rest in the on position with the security light on and should stay on for 10 minutes. Once the security light shuts off, repeat the procedure until the engine starts, meaning that relearn procedure is complete. When I installed a new key lock cylinder, on the fourth attempt is when my car started. Course the alternative is taking it the dealership and they can use a Tech 2 scanner to have the BCM learn the new key lock. No telling how much that will cost you. |
