2003 Suburban Z71 4wd

Hey all, I've got a 2003 Suburban Z71. When I put it in 4 Hi, the indicator light comes on to let me know I'm in 4wd, but it's still in 2wd. It won't actually go into 4wd even though it says it's in. Any thoughts on what it could be?

with the vehicle parked engine running place the vehicle in and out of 4wd ..do you hear any clunking clicking ? do you have any service 4wd light on ? you should if this is not engaging .

when in 4wd front of vehicle off ground ,in park , is the front axle locked together as one ?

Inspect trac II transfercase fluid it should be blue ..filled to the top of the fill hole . If fluid black color you will need to repair replace the transfercase ..

No clunking or clicking, but I have heard a little whiny noise that sounded like it was transferring over. No service 4wd light either.

As for checking the front axle and the fluid, I'll have to check that this weekend. Thanks for the help so far!
