98 eclipse nonturbo- just turns off. Need help
ok i have a 98 eclipse 2.0 nonturbo stick. Ill be driving and all of a sudden itll turn off. But sometimes when its about to turn off itll give you a warning by when you step on the gas, it decelerates instead of accelerate. And after it turns off it wont start back up for about 5 mins. While i have someone cranking i checked for spark and fuel at the rail which i have both. Please help. Its wifeys daily driver. Thanx

Sounds like the fuel pump is having an issue keeping up w/ the demand for fuel. That would explain why you decelerate when you push the gas because all that air is going into the cylinders and not enough fuel. Check your Fuel Pressure Regulator by checking to see what kind of fuel pressure it is holding. Also, there could be an issue with the pump. I don't know much about the 420a motor so maybe Jason or Dave can chime in with some useful info for ya.

Welcome to AF.
Ned is correct. Could also very well be the fuel filter as well. As you hit the gas for more fuel, a dirty filter will restrict the flow. When was the last time this was changed?

I agree with your replies but sometimes ill turn it off and it wont start either and i have pressure. Do you think it could be a sensor?

Are you getting any Check Engine Lights at all when this happens or is it on? Best bet would be to check the sensors and make sure they're acting like they should be. First 2 I would do, is the Crank Position Sensor and the Cam Position Sensor. Both of those are vital and anytime there's a slight problem with them or if they start dying, they tend to throw off the whole balance of a good running car.

I dont have any lights even while its happening. Also in the morning-it doesnt idle but it starts.

I'm with dave with looking at the fuel filter. Its super easy to change and well worth it weather it fixes it or not. Definitely look at the FPR, that could also be the issue. Have you looked at any of the above suggested solutions?

I had this problem a long time ago, it ended up being some relay switch or sensor, it was a pain in the ass to figure out what it was

If the ECU detects a problem with a sensor it can shut off fuel and spark and the fuel pump. I had a bad speed sensor that would randomly shut the car off and I would have to pull the keys out before it would restart. No cel either, only way I tracked it down was the speedo didn't work.
You said when the car cuts off it wont restart for a few minutes. Check for spark when you are attempting to restart the car. If the ECU is not allowing the car to start it will not spark. Also try unhooking the battery for 30s and then restarting it. That will reset the ECU and it should start back
