96 Xj Pitman Arm

So i recently had my rig's tires r/b and the guy tells me that my pitman arm needs to be replaced, How do you know when the arm is going bad or has failed? other than it cracking how else would it fail? i cant see it needing to be replaced. My XJ has 243000 on it so any help would be appreciated
