02 High Voltage Switch Squeak (Distributor)

It seems as if my High Voltage Switch (cap and/or rotor) is squeaking when I first start the truck. I can also feel a slight vibration when I put my hand on the cap. Squeaking goes away when I start driving. Does a bearing or something in the rotor go bad causing a squeak and vibration? Does this mean the cap and/or rotor need to be replaced? Parts store has one without module for $90. I assume I do not need the module as the truck runs fine. Has anyone had this happen before?

Re: 02 High Voltage Switch Squeak (Distributor)

Distributor shaft bushings can wear but the driven gear, (on the distributor shaft) can also wear. If you end up needing a distributor, Dorman makes one that has an aluminum housing instead of plastic, lifetime warranty, and comes with the camshaft position sensor, distributor cap and rotor for $96.

Camshaft retard must be checked/adjusted after replacing the distributor, (requires a capable scan tool).

Re: 02 High Voltage Switch Squeak (Distributor)

Thanks a lot.

1.) So, would you recommend I replace it then because it is squeaking on start up?
2.) Do I have to replace the camshaft position sensor or just keep the extra part?
3.) After replacing the distributor, can I drive the truck to a scan tool (I don’t have one)
or, will that damage any mechanics or electronics?

Thanks again.

Re: 02 High Voltage Switch Squeak (Distributor)

1.) I would recommend diagnosing the problem before replacing any parts
2.) The replacement distributor is completely assembled, install and adjust.
3.) If camshaft retard is out of spec, it will set DTC P1345 and the SES light will come on. If the SES light does not come on, you can safely drive the vehicle to a shop that can check/adjust camshaft retard.
