axle nut size

yes, does anyone know what size the axle nut is on a 1997 pontiac gp?

It is 34 MM. Sockets can be purchased @ most big box parts stores.

My '97 GTP has a 36mm axle nut.

I used a 1 3/8" on my '99 GTP axel nut, and my friend also used it on his '99 SE........it worked PERFECTLY. When you calculate the mm conversion (using the 1 inch = 25.4 mm), it works out to 34.925 mm.........so, if it is, in fact, a 36 mm nut, that probably explains why my 1 3/8" socket worked so well (perhaps even better than a 36 mm socket), as it was a nice "snug" fit on the nut, which is what you want in that case.
Plus........a 1 3/8" socket might be easier to find than the metrics.
