351 cleveland rear seal 73 Mustang

Have a 73 Mustang with a leaking rear seal. I never did much on detroit iron..is the rear seal a wick or rubber kind? Can it be replaced by removing the transmission without droping the pan and rear bearing..how's it done?? If it is wick can a modern type be retro-ed. Thanks, Bob

I'm not sure but if its a one piece seal you have to pull the transmission. If its two piece you need to drop the oil pan and loosen the crank main bearings. Then install the upper half put in the lower half and re torque all the bearings.
http://www.ebay.com/ search for rear main seal for your engine.

Re: 351 cleveland rear seal 73 Mustang

apparently it's a 2 piece...when you say remove the bearing caps, do you mean only the rear? I suspect the front part of the crank is fixed by the timing chain, etc. Are you thinking removing the other bearing caps the crank can tilted creating enough room access the upper part of the seal?

also...I'm very close to you in Anderson. I collect old gas pumps and stuff. Maybe you know of a old rusty one in your area I may be able to persaude the owner to sell me. Thanks, Bob
