I have a miss I can't figure out

My '02 Grand Prix, 196K miles. Driving the car under load, it hesitates. Classic feel that you get when spark plugs start going bad. I installed new double platinum plugs, and got a replacement set of GM wires under warranty, and put everything in, it was looking great. Unfortunately, I didn't fix anything.

I can easily reproduce it doing 20mph up a steep hill near my house. Going pretty slow up the hill, low rpms, the engine feels like it misses a few times. As soon as you give it some gas it just takes off and all's well.

The next thing I would think to check are the coil packs, but I din't have a simple way of checking those, other than buying one & swapping them around. And as I read in a similar thread, I suppose a fuel injector could be at fault.

Someone recommend me a game plan.

-Dave

Re: I have a miss I can't figure out

Dave, Obviously the issue here is the fact that you used this car more heavily while your 08 was in the shop due the subframe and thats what caused your problem. Bring it to the body shop and tell them its their fault and make them fix it! (sorry couldn't resist, I'll stop now!)

First, unplug all the ignition wires at the coil packs and have an aissistant crank the motor over for a few seconds.

You should observe sparks jumping across the two consecutive towers on each coil pack. If one coil cannot make the spark jump across, swap them around and see if your issue is with the coil itelf of the ignition module.

My next plan of attack would be to remove the ICM and bring it in to oreilley's for testing. If it tests good, Have them do it again to get it nice and hot.

I have seen beginning stages of ICM failure where the car will start and idle just fine, but as soon as you give it gas, it stubled and died.

Let us know what you find out!

Sorry!

Any luck on the coil packs?

I won't get a chance to mess with it for a couple days, but I'll post back.

Re: I have a miss I can't figure out

Since it's a miss under load on an '02, have the converter checked as they are a known issue on 01-02 GP's and GM has an extended warranty on them due to this issue. If the cat has already been changed, then we need to start looking elsewhere.

Re: I have a miss I can't figure out

Well I pulled the plug wires off tonight and did the coil pack test. Having never done this before, I put black electrical tape on coil tips for 2 of the packs at a time and had someone crank the engine. The tape didn't matter, I could see spark jumping across the tips according to firing order.

My next step will probably be my friendly neighborhood repair tech. It's my wife's car, I need to get it fixed, and I don't have the ability to test fuel injectors, etc. Thanks for all the help fellas. I'll let you all know what it ends up being.

The cat was changed around 79K, it was so plugged up they almost couldn't pull it into the work bay at the dealer. It was some years ago, I don't remember exactly what the symptoms were, but the cat did enter my mind. It's scheduled at a local shop (not GM) tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Re: I have a miss I can't figure out

The car is fixed. I'm not going to say what it is, you're gonna have to guess. In addition to my initial post, I'll add that when climbing hills even at high speed, 60mph for example, the car kinda lunges forward, falls back, repeatedly.

I dropped it off at my trusted local shop, they had it diagnosed & fixed in under an hour. OK, GO!
