Question defective radio paint?

Im new here but want to see if others are having this problem.
Okay - So this sounds strange, even to me, but I have a 2003 Envoy with 18000 miles and Ive had to replace the radio 4 times.
The dealer is very good about it but it seems that the buttons keep loosing the paint. Ive NEVER had this happen with any other vehicle.
Is anyone else having the paint wear off the buttons prematurely?
I dont think I push the buttons too much.
I almost feel guilty when I bring it back - like I not supposed to change the station.
One service person said this has happened and someone else said Ive never seen this before.
This last epidisode of switch, I had the car for about 1/2 hour and the search key had paint come off. Okay so I touched it about 10-12 times since it was new and my channels werent programed.
I didnt have any lotions or anything on my hands.
Any ideas out there?

radio button paint

Hi;

I have the same problem. It appears that the buttons I use the most are not white. I was going to put some black nail polish on them but I thought it would look strange. The dealer won't fix it.

I had the same problem about 4 months into my new 2005 envoy's life..
I have the radio with XM, FM, CD etc..
and We have to push the BAND button repeatedly to get from XM1 to XM2 to FM, to FM2 to AM, etc..
Doing this apparently made the paint wear off on the BAND
button (my wifes nails may have chipped it off also)
They had to special order a new radio JUST for one stupid button,
they also ordered the radio and didn't call me, and when we went
back into the dealer they said they had shipped it back
cause they can only keep them 3 days. I never got a call that it WAS
in.. anyway, they ordered a new one again, and we got that installed
and all was ok..
what a cheap radio, they should have had seperately buttons
for xm, fm, am etc.. o well

Paint Chipping Off Radio Dials

I had the same problem on a 2003 Envoy. It was still under warranty and they replaced the on/off button only. As some have replied the whole radio needs replacing in some cases.
GM stock is in the tank as their upper mangement rearranges the deck chairs. Their quality stinks! I have a new 2005 Envoy with less than 5000 miles on it and I'm very dissatisfied with it. The headlights dim and the AMP gauge drops to the far left, (discharge). GM has told me this is a "normal condition". They have replaced the battery and the alternator and it continues to do this. I have asked for a buy back from them and have also filed with the BBB. I have been a true blue GM vehicle buyer for years. I have purchased my last General Motors vehicle.

Re: defective radio paint?

My Envoy only has 7200 miles and already I noticed the button in the center of the lower knob (info) is wearing off.

Re: defective radio paint?

GM didn't design their paints very well. Most of the plastics with white writting GM has, wears off, like the cruise control, etc. But it is the chemicals that you body produces which break the paint down. It does it from my 2000 Envoy, to the 2006 H3. But hopefully GM learned on their 07 models.

Re: defective radio paint?

The wearing of the paint is caused mostly if you use sunblock, or lotion. Its not your hand oils. Its the chemicals in these products that soften the paint. Ford and Toyota have the exact same problems. My recommedation is avoid putting these products on while in the car driving and then touching the buttons. My question is however, can you buy the buttons individually or do you have to replace the whole unit?

Re: defective radio paint?

Yes I have the same problem, I just recently bought this SUV at 122k and the paint on the CD/RADIO Deck is coming off. GMC puts on cheap paint for this SUV and need to improve!!!!...

Re: defective radio paint?

I have a 2005 Yukon Denali, I bought it new but not even 2 years after buying it the buttons on the radio started fading and wearing really bad. The good news is I found a company that has a way to make them look new without buying new buttons or whole new radio. I only spent like $20 bucks and they sent me a kit and about 20 min later my radio looked new again. Id say its worth checking out. The only problem I had was the shipping was a little expensive but its been a year since I bought from them so maybe its cheaper now?

www.nuknobs.com is where I bought the kit from

Good Luck!
