Smile 1997 Escort Wagon 114k Check engine light.

I have a 1997 ford escort wagon lx and im at about 114,400 miles. My check engine light came on when i was on the freeway. i was going about 50-60mph. The car runs great so im not sure what the deal is. Any suggestions.. I know i do have a old air filter and it may be about time for a oil change but could that be the issue? I just recently changed my breaks. And last time the light came on it was because i needed some transmission fluid so i filled it up and has been good until now.??? Any suggestions??

Most parts stores will use a code reader and tell you what the problem is. Stop by a store and see if they can tell you what your engine code is.
Without knowing the code there is just too much guesswork... though if I had to guess I would say O2 sensor or fuel issue.

Ford does a cat efficiency test when traveling at a constant speed between 40 and 60 MPH. I will bet you a dime to a dollar that you have either a bad HEGO or a bad cat. Then there is other things like bad parts shot in the engine etc.

Given the mileage on the car, and assuming that they still have the original O2 sensor, and the speed mentioned, I was going to guess O2 sensor as well.

Just in case you are not familiar-a 'HEGO' is an oxygen sensor. Usually a check engine light comes on because a sensor is getting and abnormal reading. Oil and brakes should not affect it. In fact, I'm surprised the tranny did. Try unhooking the battery for a few minutes. When you hook it back up the light will be out. If you are real lucky it will stay out. May not but it's worth a try. This light does not mean you are in danger of ruining your engine. That's what red ones are for

Re: 1997 Escort Wagon 114k Check engine light.

I have a 96 lx and my engine light has been on since i remembered even disconnecting the battery it would still appear. My car seems to be running like new otherwise. Not sure for a 1997 but you can hook up a diagnostic reader to the port under the driver’s side dash and get the trouble codes..then you well know exactly what the problem is....
My diagnostic port seems to be spoiled so i have to replace it..
