Re: top speed

If you think you have a lot of time and money into it now with only lowering and doing I/H/E, wait until you have put enough into it to get it to keep up with a lightly modded GST or GSX. I have a ton of admiration and respect for people like david-b, vanilla_gorrilla, and SilvrEclipse that go through the work of doing it, but I am sure they can attest to the fact that it would have been a lot cheaper and a lot easier to get where they are now had they gotten a GST or GSX instead. If you just plain like your car and don't want to get a new one then go for it, but it will be a lot of work even to get it to where a near stock turbo car is.

As for being critical of your hunger for speed, Silvr's right where I am coming from. IMO, it would be one thing if a speeder was to get in a wreck and be the only one that had to deal with the consequences, but there other people on the road that could be hurt or killed, not to mention the mental anguish the speeders parents, other family, and friends would have to go through should they get wrecked. Its just not worth it man, get your need for speed out on a track.

I didn't do my research before I bought my car. It was a 'Oh I want it so I bought it' type deal. If I had done the research, I would have bought a GSX, but I didn't. However, I wish I would have gone straight for the turbo. All the money in bolt-ons and everything else could have easily gone for a rebuilt block and a turbo.

Look at it this way... put every bolt-on on the car, (minus a turbo and spray) and use the stock block with a completely rebuilt head... and you come to less than 160whp fully dyno tuned. Throw a turbo on a stock motor and you start off at greater than that... around 170whp or so depending on what turbo, tuning and all the extra details.

Re: top speed

I was putting down around 200whp at 9-10psi on the stock block. The motor did blow after 1.5 years so it wont last forever but like dave said its the best option for the 420a motor.

Re: top speed

well thanks for your honesty guys... but i never said i was street racing. for now the eclipse is my daily driver, but this spring, im looking to get a family car and set the 420 on a motor stand and go to work....
and just fyi
all my 'dangerous' high speed attempts are usually on an isolate stretch of parkway away from rural areas

Sure you could pull some more power out of it with more timing and maybe leaner a/f ratio but it wont be significant power.

If you want more power you either need to turbo it or plan on spending a shit ton of money on it and maybe be get to 160-170whp

I have also been there, 16 years old and wanting my 420a motor to go fast on the highway, thinking "well, i have a cool looking car now lets see how fast I can go to look even more cooler"

it only took one speeding ticket for me to stop that shit, not to mention now that i'm older I look back and see how dangerous it was for me and others around me.

Same here now that I think about it. First and only ticket 2 weeks after getting the car... the day my temp plates came off and the real ones went on. The real plates weren't even fully registered at the time so the cop couldn't find any information on my car. Long night. Still drive fast, but not stupid.

Re: top speed

LOL!! No wrecks, 3 times being pulled over, and no tickets. I drive like a grandma now, if I am in a hurry its MAYBE 2-3 over or if I am just out for a cruise its up to 5 under. Most of the time i hover right around the speed limit though.

Re: top speed

man i'm like way over the limit all the time. I don't even remember the last time I got a ticket but I know where all the cops hang out and I know where all the good roads are but thats just how it is in small towns.

Re: top speed

I have had my share of tickets.

two 10 over speeding tickets

one 25 over speeding ticket

2-3 warnings for speeding

4 warnings for noise violations

one failure to yield right away (resulted in crash)

all this happend within the 1st 3 years of my liscense. I have been really good since and havn't had anything in about 3 years

Cool Re: top speed

I have a gs with an exhaust and cold air and I hit 128 no problem. Fifth gear took a while but the road ran out so I had to stop. I was at around 5500 when i hit it so I'm sure it would hit probably 135 before it red lined.
