Clint Eastwood Slams Political Correctness

Actor Clint Eastwood sees nothing funny about political correctness.

The "Dirty Harry" actor told Germany's Der Spiegel that modern society lives in a state of fear over the possibility of being labeled racist for telling jokes based on ethnicity or nationality.

"People have lost their sense of humor," he told the magazine. "In former times we constantly made jokes about different races. You can only tell them today with one hand over your mouth otherwise you will be insulted as a racist.

"I find that ridiculous. In those earlier days every friendly clique had a 'Sam the Jew' or 'Jose the Mexican' -- but we didn't think anything of it or have a racist thought. It was normal that we made jokes based on our nationality or ethnicity. That was never a problem.

"I don't want to be politically correct. We're all spending too much time and energy trying to be politically correct about everything."

Rupert Murdoch has personally apologised for the New York Post cartoon that critics labeled as racist for likening a violent chimpanzee shot dead by police officers to Barack Obama.

The News Corporation chairman and chief executive issued a statement today in which he said the cartoon was intended only to mock Obama's economic stimulus bill, which the Post considered to be a badly written piece of legislation, but that it had turned out to be a mistake because it had offended so many.

"As the chairman of the New York Post, I am ultimately responsible for what is printed in its pages. The buck stops with me," added Murdoch. "Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologise to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted."

The original cartoon had sought to link Obama's bill to the real-life shooting, by Connecticut police last Monday, of a pet chimpanzee that attacked a friend of its owner before turning on a police officer who shot him in self-defence.

Captioned "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill", the cartoon prompted accusations that the Post was peddling a longstanding racist slur by portraying the president, who signed the economic stimulus bill last Tuesday, as an ape.

Agree. Every cartoon had him drawn to resemble a chimp. Funny how no one was carrying on about that.

I think it would have been better to have a caricature of Pelosi laying dead on the sidewalk. I wonder what a howling moonbat looks like in cartoon form?

I thought the "Carbon Criminal" Pelosi, wrote the majority of the pork-bill; so therefore, I had her confused with the chimp! Looks similar to me!

Remember when all then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich wanted was to use the front steps of Air Force One?
That didn't work out, thanks to Bill Clinton's aides - but in retrospect it seems that the taxpayers never had it so good.
Now the new speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, is demanding her own personal Pentagon-provided jet.
Who's to get the tab?
That's right: You.
The speaker has decided that she needs a personal shuttle between Washington, D.C., and her home out on the Left Coast.
Historically, House speakers flew commercial. Then, after 9/11, Speaker Dennis Hastert cited security reasons in switching to a military-provided plane.
But that was a small jet: It sat 12 passengers, with a crew of five.
In contrast, Pelosi is said to want a top-of-the-line, Air Force passenger jet - the military version of the Boeing 757 - which features 42 business-class seats and a 16-member crew, plus a fully enclosed stateroom, entertainment center, private bed and state-of-the-art communications center.
Color us surprised.
We didn't think Pelosi had any use for the military whatsoever.
As for the taxpayers, they stand to get clipped for $300,000 per trip.
For a lady who stands in the first ranks of the "party of the people," she sure eats pretty high on the hog.
Not to mention that such profligate use of jet fuel would make a mockery out of Pelosi's professed political priorities.
This is the same woman who declared last month: "I promise to do everything in my power to achieve energy independence . . . and to stop global warming."
Just two weeks ago, she added, "The science of global warming and its impact is overwhelming and unequivocal." Then she dedicated a select House committee actually to do something about global warming.
Which, if one accepts the current "science of global warming," she certainly is.
She's making it worse.
The conventional view is that emissions of carbon dioxide - a greenhouse gas - are a major factor in warming. And the jet Pelosi is demanding produces more than 10,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per hour - far more than the commuter plane Hastert used.
Gingrich has a point when he says, "It is useful for members, including the speaker, to go through airport security, just like everybody else."
But that's the point: Nancy Pelosi isn't like everybody else.
She's special.
More special than her commitment to ending global warming - which turns out to be just so much hot air.

That is just crazy! If someone told me I need to apologize for how I looked in a picture because I had squinty eyes or something else, I would not only not apologize for that, but laugh in their face while they were asking me to do so. Hopefully I don't come off as Mexican this summer when I get a tan so that I have to write a sincere note of apology to the Mexican rights group.

You are aware many Mexicans are white and have the same problem you would.

BTW - My wife is a blanca (white) Mexican-American. Sad to say it but even minorities have issues with skin color within their own races or ethnic backgrounds.

Bush was called a chimp/ape all the time and there were tons of cartoons depicting him as such. No one had a problem with that, they understood that it was because he was an ass, and knew they weren't talking about his whole race. So now because Obama is half black, he is protected from such things, because with him it doesn't mean he's an ass, it means the person that said it is racist? Absolutely ridiculous. It just goes to show that the true racists are not the ones that said it, it's the ones that took offense because they automatically associate black people with monkeys. I'm also sure that some of the people complaining were not offended at all and were just looking for any reason to make a scene, and run their mouths.

Madelyn Dunham, Obama's grandmother, blazed a feminist trail in Hawaii banking circles in the late 1960s and early 1970s and rose to become one of the Bank of Hawaii's first female vice presidents.

Durham, now 85 and living in Honolulu along with her granddaughter and Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, had two obstacles to overcome in Hawaii at the time — being a woman and being part of the state's white minority.

"Was she ambitious? She had to be to become a vice president," said Clifford Y.J. Kong, 82, who was a senior credit officer at the bank at the time. "She was a top-notch executive to get appointed. It was a tough world."

Obama and Soetoro-Ng lived with their grandparents Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, and later with their mother, Ann Dunham, in 1970s Honolulu, where white people were routinely the target of discrimination.

Sam Slom, a Bank of Hawaii economist then, who is now a Republican state senator in Hawaii, recalls that as a part of the white — or "haole" — minority in Hawaii, he would regularly see housing ads that made no effort to hide racial preferences. He says he remembers ads that read, "No haoles" or "AJAs (Americans of Japanese ancestry) Only" or "No Japanese."

"That's the way it was," Slom said. "Did people talk about race? We had local jokes … like that 'pake' (Chinese) guy or the 'yobo' (Korean) who did this or that. I certainly got my share of haole jokes."

Dunham was born Madelyn Payne in Peru, Kan., on Oct. 26, 1922. When she was 3 years old, Payne's family moved to Augusta, Kan., where young Madelyn was raised, Soetoro-Ng said. She married Stanley Armour Dunham in 1940. Madelyn Dunham attended college at the University of Washington before becoming an aircraft inspector for Boeing during World War II.

After the war, she attended UC-Berkeley, worked various jobs, then came to the Islands, where she joined the Bank of Hawaii in 1960.
