Holder: US is nation of cowards on racial matters

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Eric Holder described the United States Wednesday as a nation of cowards on matters of race, saying most Americans avoid discussing unresolved racial issues.
In a speech to Justice Department employees marking Black History Month, Holder said the workplace is largely integrated but Americans still self-segregate on the weekends and in their private lives.
"Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards," said Holder, nation's first black attorney general.

Well, there is still going to be racism even with a black president. However, I believe another problem we have is the race card being drawn out far too often. I have said this before but I have been called a racist more than once by getting in a political debate where I simply started off saying, "I'm not really a big fan of Obama." In turn, they said, "that's just because your another dumb racist white boy." I in turn asked him if he was a fan of president Bush. He replied with his great discontent for GWB. I said, "so that must mean you are racist since you didn't like GWB because he is white right? Because that is all the logic you used to assess me as a racist." After that, he became a bit more quiet.

Sounds like another black man feeling sorry for himself. The kind of guy who yells "RACISM" everytime something doesn't go his way. I work with a guy who is always saying he's discriminated against because he's black. Our boss (located in another office) is always calling him and checking up on him and giving him projects and busy work to do. He gets pissed and says "he's only harrassing me because I'm black". But the thing is, he shows up 1/2 hour late every day, leaves 1/2 hour early every day, takes 2 hour lunches and disappears for 2-3 hours at a time at various time throughout the day to run errands and do personal chores. He ignores the fact that he is a sub-standard employee and claims racism as his reason to feel persecuted when in reality he's lucky he's not been fired.

I also notice in those videos where police use excessive force against a black suspect...the force is always preceded by the black guy mouthing off to the cop, or not sitting down and shutting up while the cop is interviewing other suspects...or leading 10 cop cars on a televised freeway chase. Jeezus maybe if you'd pull the fuck over when the red lights flash you wouldn't get your ass kicked?

Sorry, I'm have nothing against black people and most of the black people I know feel the same way I do. Just quit "acting a fool" and maybe you won't be mistreated?

Matt Miller, a spokesman for Holder, said later the attorney general used "provocative words to be clear that Americans of all races should stop avoiding the difficult issues of race."

Meyers said Holder's speech signals to him "that this attorney general is profoundly left in the dark and in the past about race."

"Race ain't what it used to be in America. We've changed. We have the first African American president and the first African American attorney general. Wake up, Mr. Holder! Wake up!" Meyers said.

But FOX News contributor Juan Williams said he understood what Holder was saying when he said the workplace is largely integrated but Americans still self-segregate on the weekends and in their private lives.

Echoing the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Williams said the 11:00 hour on Sundays in church is the most segregated hour during the country's week.

"Even our best colleges," Williams said. "How come all the Asian kids are here, the black kids are here, the Jewish kids are there? They live in a self-enforced segregation and I think he's saying we need to have more conversation, more honestly about that kind of racial separation."

Williams added that Holder is signaling that he will use his position to address concerns about the diminution of the civil rights division in his department.

"I think what he was saying is the civil rights division is going to be vigilant in making sure we don't have a situation where there is discrimination taking place and law enforcement is turning a blind eye."

Has it ever occurred to these asshats that people actually hang out with people like themselves because they have a lot of things in common?

I seriously doubt I'll have any interest in hanging out with a bunch of black kids and start listening to rap and hip hop just because we have a black president (OK, kinda black -- almost) and a black atty. gen, but I do admit that I like Hendrix and listen to Kravitz once in a while.

I eat my share of fried chicken & watermelon, so I guess the next thing on the the black mans agenda will be to criticized me for eating 'mo' than my fair share. At least I do have enough respect for our environment, to get out of my car and put the empty "Popeye's" chicken box & 32oz drink cup in the trash can, rather than throw it in the parking lot like some cultures prefer to do!

In the early days of mankind, the races were separated and given their own languages for a reason. Forced integration has not accomplished anything, if the hostilities of the past continue to dominate the minds of the different cultures. Time to look in the mirror -- Holder

The most dangerous folks alive, are the ones who hold power in law enforcement and have a grudge against other cultures. Keep an eye on this one!

Statistics are statistics, and there is quite simply still an enormous division between white and minority demographics with respect to education, jobs, income, socioeconomics, etc...So in short, no, we cannot put racism behind us.

He was just grandstanding. Maybe if Mr Holder had sent some time in the military he would know all about about forced integration, affirmative action and race relations which IMO is now a thing of the past. Our military services have the best cross section of America based on race and the representation is pretty darn close as to national standards based on population. We all got along just fine so what the hell is Holder referring to? It sounds like he needs to get a grip on reality and spend some more time with people of other races other than black.


BTW - He can do it on the weekends or weekdays. I really could care less about him and his philosophy on race.

Don't try to convince me that the doors have not been wide open for minorities in "education, jobs, income, socioeconomics" for many years, the problem is; many people classified in that category prefer not to cross the threshold! In the school system where I worked, we were criticized by the minorities for demanding the same standards & expectations for all students, regardless of race, creed, religion, or national origin. We did not lower our standards for minorities, because we knew that if they had the same education, knowledge & skills as anyone else, they could compete equally in the job market; and those who did, have become equally successful. Job quotas were ineffective, because it put people in positions that they were not prepared to handle, therefore resentment & hostility prevailed.

So in short, no, we cannot put racism behind us.

That is unfortunate, it's just another way of feeling sorry for yourself. Equal opportunity prevails, in fact if you are an minority with the same education, knowledge & skills, as anyone else, you have the advantage in the job market. Throw the race card in the garbage, it will not pave the road to your success!

Post ONE peer reviewed, major journal article supporting your supposition that minorities have equal opportunity to succeed. Or that minorities have a decreased desire to succeed relative to caucasians.

The time for talk is over, let's see some hard evidence from the conservative right backing them up on this issue.

Racism truly baffles me. We're the most advanced species on the planet with cogniscense that extends beyond anything else one could find, yet we cannot seem to get over the fact that the coloring to our skin is different. "Well, I know how to create things that most people would sit and look at in wonder, but damnit, that black guy gets on my nerves because he's not the same color as me." Seriously? I mean really, how PATHETIC is our society because of this?

Still, I also think that there are too many people that say someone is racist or this is racist and that is racist, much like was mentioned above. Case in point is the recent New York Post cartoon that is a lampoon on the way the stimulus bill was created, not on the President who made it his priority. If you ask me, the black people or asian people or whatever other race you want, that make issues out of things like cartoons that are meant to be SATIRICAL, are doing so because they want to stir the pot and because they themselves have a problem with the races others.

I don't know, maybe I'm just rambling, but I reallllllllly hate it when someone acts racist, claims to be racist with pride or plays the race card out of ignorance or stupidity.

The fact that we are still a country of racists and bigots is a testament to the fact that our country is no more advanced than it was years ago. We're just better at hiding it these days.
