Re: trann noise

When you push the "OD" button you're turning OFF overdrive (see other posting for discussion):
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=656434

That means you're dropping OUT of overdrive (dropping down a gear), at which point the noise stops. Sounds like there might be a tranny problem with the highest gear.

Is it quiet from accelleration up TO the highest gear, then it gets noisy once it shifts into overdrive? Or do you have noise at any gear as long as the OD light is off?

Re: trann noise

Hey everyone,

I am having the same problem. After reaching 30+ MPH, I have this loud whirring noise/sound coming from the transmission. When I coast in neutral, the noise goes away. Also, when I turn overdrive off, the noise goes away. Any thoughts on how to proceed in fixing the problem?

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee - 5.2 L.

Thanks.

Re: trann noise

I haven't had any whirring noises in a while. At one point I added a bottle of transmission tune-up (something like Lucas Trans Tune works well). Over time the sounds went away, although I might have also just gotten used to them. It's a good starting point to be sure your transmission and transfer case fluids are at the right levels. If all fluids are full and clean, it could be that the transmission bands need to be adjusted (I'm not a tranny expert - perhaps others could contribute further).

Let us know what you find!

I strongly recommend not using transmission additives it is a temporary fix that swells the seals and deteriorates them and over time the seals will leak and cause bigger problems just my 2c
