Overdrive question

I have a 1993 Jeep grand cherokee limited. My dad says that when overdrive is on that the light is off above the button for it. But I think the light should be on if overdrive is on. If anyone knows which of us is right plz help out thanx.

Re: Overdrive question

The 'OD Off' button is used to cut the overdrive in and out, say when doing heavy towing or steep grades where the transmission might switch in and out of overdrive excessively. If the light's on, either you've turned overdrive off by pressing the button, or its flashing and that usually means something wrong w/ the trans.

Re: Overdrive question

Harddisc is right, it is an 'OVERDRIVE OFF' light, meaning: when the 'OVERDRIVE OFF' light is ON - then the OVERDRIVE OFF is activated - OVERDRIVE is turned off. The light is there to tell you that overdrive is deactivated.

It is kinda hard to explain, but the button is an OD OFF button not an OD (on)button in which if pushed it would turn the OD on, in this case it turns it OFF (activating the light).
Also, the computer will turn OD OFF (turning the light on) whenever the tranny overheats, it does this to help cool the tranny.

Re: Overdrive question

Keep in mind that at startup, o/d is ON, so when you hit the button you will turn it off.

In my 2000, the light on the dash says, "O/D OFF"
