Fujimi 917 spare tire question

I'm at the point of putting the spare tire in the frame of my Fujimi Porsche 917. I am not using the HRM motor kit so the rear hatch will be closed. If I mount the tire the way the instructions show the detailed side will be facing up and not showing. Visible from underneath will be the ugly plain backside.

Is this Correct?

Has anyone mounted it differently?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Fujimi 917 spare tire question

You are correct.
I filled the tire so the open backside would not be visible when viewed from the bottom.
The tire should be mounted as per the instructions to be correct, if that matters to you.

Re: Fujimi 917 spare tire question

Here's a stupid question. Why did they even carried a spare? Was is part of the rules and what was the reasoning for the rule? Was the spare ever removed during the race? Please don't flame me.

Re: Fujimi 917 spare tire question

At that time the cars had to be legal for the road. That's why it had a spare and turn signals. In the days of the GT40 they even had to have room for a suitcase. I can remember watching a WideWorld of Sports as a kid in the 60's and they showed tech inspection on a GT40 and fitting a suitcase was part of it.

Re: Fujimi 917 spare tire question

Although the spare is no longer carried, the suitcase rule was still in effect for GT cars, at least as recently as the Corvette C5-R . . . Not sure about current rules (and yes, it's a GMP for those who wonder).

The 917 also had the mandatory space for the suitcase....two in fact:-)
They are behind the rear wheels, left and right of the spare wheel.

Re: Fujimi 917 spare tire question

Thanks for the replys. I'm going to modify the tire to sit upside down and make the detailed side visible.

I'll post some pics in a few days when I get it mounted.
