Vegas winnings and sales pitches

This is a totally off the wall hypothetical question. I am very green to the whole Vegas scene. I've been there a few dozen times for events and usually I put a $10 bill in a slot machine and end up breaking even. Sometimes I lose $5, sometimes I win $5 but I'm not a high roller. I usually break even at blackjack, and haven't played much else.

The past few visits I usually limit myself to putting a few bucks in that huge slot machine at the front door with the million dollar jackpot and I consider it like playing the lottery; the odds are against you, but you can't win if you don't play.

I was just thinking, though... if a person hits a larger winning - that is to say large enough that they take your picture - is there anything else involved? Having been in sales myself, I would think those winnings are a perfect opportunity to get screwed, like those timeshare pitches or on "deal or no deal."

Is it just "here's your check, thanks for playing," or is there more to it? Do they whisk you away to some room where they try to find excuses to not pay? Is it like denying a warranty claim, or is it just straight forward money?

I hear (I heard of a guy that knew a guy....) that they do take you in the back room, where the first thing is that your local IRS agent is there to take the government's share. After you're done with that, you can leave with a check if you want, but they usually try to persuade you to take a nice room, stay a few days on them, and give them a chance to win back the money.

I have never even been in Vegas, but would really love to go, so I cannot really comment on this one, but just had to let this out, lol!
