Re: Cammed Grand prix gt

no problems down the road unless you take the cat off and have inspections. I passed emissions with my cat off. Horsepower is really strong in the mid to upper rpm's, there's no dyno numnbers are not out yet. I think I gained at least 35-45 with no cat and cold air intake. If I were to buy another set of headers I would buy the pacesetter from zzp all the flaws are fixed by them and they look a little easier to install.

My next mod is a gt2 cam, ecu,

By then my GT should be screemin. As of right now I'll leave a GTP in rearview

Re: Cammed Grand prix gt

The pacesetter header is too big for a GT. They use a pretty big primary, as well as a big collector. To everyone that has a NA 3800, I recommend S&S headers.

Something you guys that are interested in headers might want to check out:

Re: Cammed Grand prix gt

Anyone weighing-in actually have S&S headers installed on a L36 or L67 3800 or any GM V6 engine or done the work DIY? If you are going to use S&S headers you are better off buying them direct from S&S and not a middleman because you may need timely tech support to address minor installation issues. Cost difference is not that much. See link to S&S below.

I just completed installation of these S&S ceramic coated headers on my son's '02 Olds Alero GL2 (3400) and it took way longer than 3 hours. Same for my SLP headers on my GTP. Although it costs more stick with the ceramic coated because you will not need any heat shields or heat wrap and the headers run hotter which supposedly transfers exhaust gases better improving the scavenging effect and increased power gains over non ceramic coated.

One advantage S&S headers have is there is only one flange with donut to connect and not a totally separate crossover pipe. Disadvantage is the pre CAT 02 sensor bung is mounted on the pipe from the front bank and not the collector so the 02 sensor reading or sample is taken from those cylinders only. A post CAT 02 simulator may have to be used or PCM re-programmed to inhibit the P0420 DTC you may get intermittently.

Re: Cammed Grand prix gt

Bnaylar awesome job explaining. One question is do the S&S headers need to be welded to the stock CAT or are they too like the pacesetters...Bolt on?
What will a good exhaust system give me as far as power, what should i stay away from fellas?

Re: Cammed Grand prix gt

you can use the pacesetter if you buy the zzp solid motor mount it lowers the engine enough to fit the 02 sensor in. The headrs I have on my GT were intended for the GTP but they still fit, only difference is I had to take off the whole throttle body to get the job done.

Unless it has changed since the old S&S data goes back to 2006 welding is required as was the case with my SLP headers. Technically the input of the CAT should be welded and not clamped or flanged with bolts. However, check with S&S pre-sales or tech support at the web site given earlier or you can call them by telephone just to be sure. Now for the 3400 GM 60 degree engines the S&S header install was a complete bolt-on operation with no welding required. We got the package with the 2.5" Magnaflow hi-flo CAT, 2.5" downpipe/woven flex joint section as you can see in the pic. It bolted right up to the resonator flange and the collector output. But it was up there in cost at around $867 plus shipping from Phoenix, AZ.

As far as power they are all comparable give or take. Of course, you will get more power if you had the supercharged version of the SIII 3800 engine. On the normally aspirated engine the mid to high range really gets a kick. IMO the S&S headers appear to be a good choice although TOG and SLP are the favorites. S&S had some issues with the ceramic "Jet Hot" coating not doing too good of a job and the header tubes were found rusting but supposedly that was corrected. TOG supplied crappy header gaskets that people had problems with - exhaust leak. Also, I recall TOG went out of business so they may be hard to come by and tech support nil. On the SLP brand I like the Torca clamps used on the crossover pipe between the front and rear bank headers versus the flanged bolt type. We had a few members with problems with the Pacesetter headers and regretted purchasing them. Poor weld joints causing leaks but ZZP has a kit that supposedly corrects the issue. Personally I prefer the 1 5/8" header tubes over the 1 3/4".

Like any mods headers will be a matter of personal preference no matter what horror stories you hear about installation, any goals set for HP/torque, and how deep your pockets are $$$.
